Default Computer Chip

Hi

I found this website that advertises a computer chip upgrade :

CHRYSLER CROSSFIRE G-Force Peformance Chip

It's one of those things that sounds too good to be true. After digging around a little bit I also noticed on the left-hand side that you can get upgraded computer chips for cars like a '63 Triumph Spitfire, a '57 Desoto and an Amphicar - all cars that didn't have computers to begin with.....
So I thought I'd post here and ask if anyone knows anything about these chips or if anyone knows anything about a reputable computer chip upgrade ?

I'm not really looking for more power - that'd be nice but I like the better gas mileage and lower emissions aspect of a chip. Does anyone have a suggestions for a chip that will help me out with emissions and mileage and maybe even more power ?

Thank you,

Dave

What an interesting first post...
Dave you can't chip these cars. You can get them reprogrammed/tuned, but not chipped.

Ah !

I figured it was too good to be true. Thanks very much for the info on the computer chips.

Now I know not to bother with anything like that.

I got all excited when I saw the claims for significantly better gas mileage and lower emissions. I've had a few cars fail emissions tests in the last bunch of years. All those great-running, drive-anywhere cars ended up in the junkyard because they were not licensable without an "E" test. I thought that if I could get a chip for the Crossfire and lower the emissions AND get better mileage AND more power.....all for $70 ??!!! Talk about the Holy Grail.

Thanks for the valuable info,

Dave

Let me help you out a little further then lol. Avoid all of these products:

Electric Super Chargers
e-Racing :: OFFICIAL SITE :: The e-RAM Electric Supercharger from e-Racing Motorsports

The Turbonator
Turbonator Super Charger by Tornado

Fuel Line Magnets
Amazon.com: Fuel OptiMiser Improves Mileage up to 24% - Standard Model: Home Improvement

and last but not least,
Hydrogen Generators
Amazon.com: Genesis Hydrogen Generator Complete Kit: Automotive

None of them work, although some are quite interesting.

Dave, just about all of us ask the same thing when we got our cars. There have been tons of posts regarding the topics. Not being a **** but if you search you will find tons of interesting material about power gains etc. Most good topics would be Cold Air Intakes CAI's (needswings or TVT) Mufflers, Ansa or magnaflow, TVT upgrades and sprint booster- theres an upgraded one thats pretty sweet. Also topics of reducing weight etc can help.

welcome to the forum and enjoy the assistance this group constantly provides.

PM me if I can help you with anything

Pooly

Thanks Pooly.
Thanks also Thirteendog - I remember those crazy fuel line magnets from the '80's. It's hard to believe some Federal body hasn't shut those guys down yet.

My '04 Crossfire automatic is bone-stock and I'm very, very happy with it the way it is. Like I had written, I just got really excited with the gas mileage and emissions reductions etc....

About the only thing that I'm not crazy about is the standard radio. My Chrysler radio sounds and looks great but a couple of years ago I got hooked on HD radio and it's tough to go back to standard radio stations. However, I'm leery of ripping into that beautiful dash and messing something up.

Thanks guys for your input on the computer chip thing though !
I'll do some searching through the archives for more info on radio upgrades and gas mileage tips etc..

Thank you,
Dave

Welcome to the forum Surfnut.
I'd like to hear more about the cars that were scrapped because they failed the "E" test. There is almost always someway to get around those tests, unless ya live in California.........Hmmmm Surfnut? Maybe I answered my own question.

Canada.
I made the mistake of renting a surfboard one year on vacation in Florida and I've had the bug ever since....all vacations MUST be to a place with consistent surf nearby. For what it's worth, Southern California is my favorite place to be....

In Ontario, where I live, if your car is 1988 or newer, it has to be E-tested every 2 years in order to get your license plate renewal. If the car/truck doesn't pass the E-test (with emissions numbers constantly being tightened by the province) then the vehicle cannot be relicensed. However, IF you spend more than $400 to repair the vehicle and it STILL doesn't pass the E-test, you can get a "conditional" pass to renew the plate.

This is how I know the E-tests are money grabs. I believe that if the government was serious about getting polluters off the road then the rules should be simple - if the car doesn't pass the E-test, it shouldn't be licensed. However, as it stands, if you spend $400 or more on "repairs" then it's okay if the vehicle doesn't pass...they'll allow you to renew the plate anyway.

Four years ago, my awesome-running Capri XR-2 convertible wouldn't pass the E-test. I put $400 into it and it still wouldn't pass so they gave me a conditional pass so I could license the car. Two years ago, it wouldn't pass the E-test again, the mechanic did a bunch of work and without my consent, ran up a $784 bill and passed the E-test by FOUR PARTS PER MILLION.

I swore I would never e-test that car again or go back to that mechanic again. So this year, my 37 M.P.G. turbocharged, intercooled, starts every time I turn the key, absolutely beautiful condition XR-2 convertible with ice-cold factory air (much colder than my Crossfire) is getting junked because I refuse to go through this E-test B.S. again. Some of my other cars that wouldn't pass and have been junked were an '89 Nissan 240 SX (great, great looking and running car), '89 Suzuki Samurai (couldn't kill that thing - it's now a year-round 4X4 "farm vehicle") and an '83 Mercury Lynx (35+ M.P.G.). Also had a '99 ? Saturn if I remember correctly that I put out to pasture after a failed e-test.

In theory, the E-test is a good idea but it's sure cost me out the butt !
All the while, my doofus neighbor tools around twice weekly on his smoke-spewing riding lawnmower as eighteen wheelers drive by pouring out black diesel exhaust - but they're exempt from E-tests so it's okay for them !

Sorry ~ I'll get off my creaky soapbox now. This isn't the place for my whining and I'm sure nobody wants to hear it anyway !

I hear you Cali guys have got it pretty bad too -

Dave

Wow that suc's Dave. I've heard similar horror stories about Canadian bureaucracy from our Northern Friends. It almost sounds like extortion. Unfortunately, it's not that much different in many places here in the lower 48.
Hope you can keep that XF properly tuned.

Do a little searching on the forum for radios. I installed a blaupunkt myself with no experience. A simple plug and play. No wire harness needed. Stick the key in that came with the radio from crutch field. Slide the old radio out. Plug the new radio in... No special wires. Now I get the aux Jack so I can play anything I want. Best 140 dollars I ever spent. Took me 10 min t o install. I still have the factory radio boxed up and in storage in case I ever want to put back in.

By the way.... The face of my blaupunkt is the same silver as our interior. Do a search in the audio section of this forum. That is what I did. Wished I had done the radio switch years ago but like you I was too afraid to mess with the interior. I also didn't want a kid from best buy touching my car either.

Yeah, the stock unit is ok if you like to listen to standard radio or a CD. Since I don't listen to either, I have replaced the stock unit on my roadster with a Sony aftermarket that supports an auxiliary port. I have an MP3 player and a somewhat portable Sirius radio receiver which the stock radio doesn't support unless you get one of those mickey-mouse FM transmitters that don't sound particularly well. BTW, welcome to the forum!

Thanks very much for the tips on the radio swaps guys.

I'll take your advice and do some searches here - I'm good with wiring but I'm really worried about messing up this beautiful car. Hopefully I'll be able to find specifics on the wiring and the amp and all that stuff so I won't screw things up too badly.

Thanks for the info. When I figure out what I'm going to do, I'll start a new thread on a radio swap.

Thanks,
Dave
