Default Hi yall dumb question here

Since my first oil change at high rpm's or rates of speed = rpm's I assume I get a real quick gauge warning of HI and what appears to be an oil symbol. It goes away after a 30 to 60 second interval. My question is since the temp of the car is not elevated beyond normal does that mean they have overfilled the oil amount? I know it sounds dumb but i questioned the dealer about it and they said it is normal with these cars...?

Eventually I will start working on this car myself, but as long as I have extended warranty I take it to the stealer/dealer. Just wanted to get yall's opinion since yall indeed know mare that the local dealership when it comes to out vehicles. Thanks for the help in advance. - Lee

Not normal and check on your dipstick which has to be more reliable than a gage.

always check your own oil...make sure it is at the correct level...especially where they use a bulk oil system. They can shut off early, or late...leaving with not enough or too much...

I noticed that HI reading after my first oil change at the dealership. They put in 8 quarts, but that might be a little too much. You can check the oil level two ways. By the dipstick, of course, but the other way is on the dashboard. After the car has been turned off for at least 5 minutes, turn the key to the ON position - the position just before the START position. Wait about 5 seconds and you'll see the oil level icon. Press the left **** twice. You'll see OK, LOW or HI. It's just an easy way to check the oil without lifting the hood. Go back to the dealer and have them check the oil both ways (you'll have to wait 5 minutes, of course). If it's high, ask them if they want to document this problem or drain a half quart of oil. They'll probably tell you that it won't hurt the engine and they'll document it. That's what I did. At my second oil change I reminded them of this and they did it right - either let it drain alot longer, or add a little less oil. Whatever, my car is running fine.

Unless the SRT6 differs from the Stock or Limited versions, these engines hold 8.5 quarts with a new filter installed. If the dealer put only 8.0 quarts in, then you are shy half a quart.

ALWAYS double check the oil level when you let ANY shop change the oil for you.

That is probably the cause. HI would indicate that the oil has been overfilled and is showing excessive pressure when the engine is at high RPM (Revolutions Per Minute).

I'll agree with the dealer's feedback. If you overfill the engine with oil, the HI LEVEL warning light will come on! DUH!!

I had this last year at the Fall ToD GTG at Fontana. And I had done an oil change just prior to the weekend event. HI LEVEL oil warning light came on when I started handling the 'twisties' in the Dragon. It is clearly saying that the oil level is too high and the car is overfilled. This can lead to foaming and that isn't good for your engine. You'll need to remove probably a half quart to get the alarm to stop coming on. Easiest way is to syphon this out the dip stick tube using any one of the many gadgets out there. I have a fairly simple one I bought at a local Pep Boys.

These cars, according to specs, hold 8 liters of oil. That's approx 8.5 quarts (8.4535 qts) in the English system. Most dealers will probably just go ahead and add the extra 1/2 quart feeling it won't hurt the engine. (Note: They don't want 1/2 quart of oil standing around and they're going to charge you for the nine quarts anyway.) That's not the case for the M-B 3.2 liter V6. I follow the leads from other XFire owners on this forum and now only add 8 quarts when I do an oil change. And I find that the dipstick reading is practically at the full mark when I do so. On these cars, better to be slightly underfilled than overfilled.

And I still prefer to change the oil "the old fashioned way". I still get under the car and drain the oil sump. I just feel that this method gets more of the old oil out of the system vs. suctioning the oil out from the motor's top. IMO

Others more familiar with the suction or syphon approach are better able to state if there is any signifcant difference.

And here's another tip I got from The Forum. If you start doing your own oil changes, add new oil via the filter housing instead of the oil fill opening. Passageway from the filter housing will drain oil into the sump much faster.

If you're going to continue having the dealer perform the oil change, buy your own oil (8 qts) & filter and take these to the dealer. That way you have better control of the oil change by only paying for labor and probably a miscellaneous charge for shop supplies and/or other associated add-ons. If the dealer is using a bulk oil system to fill your car, these systems may not be able to absolutely control the volume of oil that is ultimately delivered to the vehicle. Depends on how their system was designed and/or installed. If their system delivers oil +/- a partial quart, then you could be overfilled during the oil change. On the older motors (and maybe today's Detroit engines?), that might not be a big deal. On these cars, IT IS!! My 1993 SSGT calls for only 3.5 qts during an oil & filter change. I've used 4 qts ever since I bought it new in 1993 and never had a problem. 131k miles, still pulls strong and continues to get 32-34 mpg around town.

Agreed with the above two posts. My car did this at the Dragon my first time up there (and on some on-ramps). Danimal suggested only putting in 8 quarts at the next change - problem solved.

(I think he's also the one who suggested adding oil via the oil filter opening, not at the cap.) Going 1/2 quart over is potentially MUCH WORSE than 1/2 quart low.
