I did say some people and did not include the author of the post I answered as he knows he should change his plugs

I was referring to people who change their plugs around 20,000 or so and believe they are going to see some magical improvement. I am talking about normal driving in an unmodified or slightly modified car. It's not my money but I always think that removing the plugs, cleaning and resetting them a few times before the 100,000 miles is up and replacing them if they are looking worn out is a good policy. I do not believe they should be left unchecked until 100,000 miles, as with other parts on the car maintenance is required.

The big change in spark plugs is on the horizon, new cars that will use corona effect sparks, this should get rid of two plugs per cylinder.

So who wants to grab a beer and discuss the necesarry programming to integrate this into our cars?

"Recent highlights include the first testing of corona ignition in an internal combustion engine. Results were very promising; indicated efficiencies were consistently 15 – 20% higher than spark ignition under identical operating conditions and burn rates were typically twice as fast with corona as spark ignition. "

It's really not necessary Brian, we all have been drinking beer for some time now. But of course a good joke is always welcome.

Something fixed at the stealership with no aggrevation? That is more rare than a sub 10k mile 6

If you own a Ford F150 with a 5.4l, changing plugs can be very expensive indeed. In a nutshell, if they can not get them out within say a day using special fluids etc, the next choice is new heads.

So, my 08 with 90k, will keep them in until it won't run anymore. Any of the issues with XF in this thread pale in comparison. I think Ford should have a class action on this one. It has been going on for some time. Upfront, the dealer said 700 and up to 2500 for plug change out. I just have to believe a local small claims court would find this in the favor of the small guy.

re: the ford 150's, local shops will charge u about 100$ total, per hole for those plugs to get changed out.
even when the right snap-on tool is used, 5 out of 8 will break.
also, theyve redesigned the plug since then, the new champions look different, and maybe wont break off when being removed
ours are easy, just donate time and skin, no special tools required

Has anyone actually written a tutorial on this yet? I did Betty's 12 today and with the advise in this thread I found it time consuming but not difficult, and nothing unexpected, BUT I have been turning wrenches for 40 years.

There is enough content in the process to write a tutorial for those whom are not as proficient at mechanicing as some of us.

It took me three hours, but I am studious and plodding when it comes to new procedures, which put me in mind of actually writing a tutorial if there isn't one already.

There is a PDF covering this subject and it has been here for some time. It is in the 'Index of Crossfire problems and How To's' in the engine section.
It is not a true step by step as that is covered in the Service Manual, it covers additional steps and hints.

Anyone have a current recommendation for brand/model of spark plug to use for NA ? I'm thinking of pulling one or two to take a look at mine. I just got my car about 3 months ago, so I have no idea if I have originals still at 110,000 miles plus. I figured I better have at least one spare before I pull any to look at them.

Word to your mother!

That is a good tutorial, and I wish I had asked before doing the deed, but there is much not there, like the coil packs and wire positions etc. Plus the purchase of that plug wrench tool is not actually necessary. NAPA sells a great 3/8ths universal joint adapter for 13 bucks that does a better job, and is multifunctional.

I will consider writing one up when I get back from this weekends festivities.
