$1,500 to replace alternator!?!?!
My dealer, who treats me well, says he can't get a Chrysler alternator and must order from Mercedes. That brings my total to $1500. Do I have any other options?
Thanks,
David

Put it in yourself, a lady did it recently as her first project on her car.
I'd say that beats $1,500 any day.
Try this; Crossfire alternator -arctic -helmet -corvette -corvettes -chevy -equalization -boots -camaro -marine -vett | eBay
It's not the labor, which I will gladly pay. Apparently the Valeo and Bosch units do not interchange, and Chrysler has them on back order. That's why my Chrysler dealer went to the MB dealer and they were quoted $1100. I have found a local shop that will give me 24-hour turnaround to rebuild mine, and I think I'll go that way.
Regarding interchange, specifically the technician (not the service advisor) said the holes do not line up and he has had to make more than one customer sad by rejecting the Bosch style units.
Thanks,
David

This is such baloney - there is no automotive alternator in the world that should cost $1500 installed.
Find one and pay a local shop to put it on. Try joeTLC.com and autohaus.com

I'm with Maxcichon. But I'd buy the rebuilt alternator (Remy/Valeo; P/N 12437) ) from RockAuto for $191 exchange ($90 core - send back the old one). You're planning to have yours rebuilt anyway. Nothing bad about rebuilt parts.
And the AutohausAZ source (pizzaguy provided above) for the alternators is a pretty good deal, too.
Alternator is easy to get to. Should be a fairly easy repair ro do.

I thought this thread was dead. I did get mine rebuilt locally.
Note I said in the OP the Valeo and Bosch units do NOT interchange. My car has the Valeo, so the posts linking to Bosch sales will not help a member with a Valeo alternator.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

My only dealer experience was with my 2003 Audi A6 2.7T at 75k miles, when I hit a pot hole and my voltimeter dropped to zero. I knew I was in trouble. I was able to drive it to a local dealer (I was in Detroit, 170 miles from home) and he quoted me $1200 for a new alternator and install. I shopped a remanufactured at a local parts store for under $200 and they put it in, ripping me off for $400 for installation. I have 206k on the car and no problem at all with that reman unit. I think when they are rebuilt, they are subject to more QA testing than an oem unit.
Wait when you hit the pole or when your voltmeter read zero? LOL!
