Default Exhaust fumes inside vehicle

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. While sitting still & idling I get exhaust fumes in the car. Once I get rolling it goes away. It happens on all settngs of the climate control, heat or AC, cold or hot.
The vents also blow warm air when on outside vent & set on max cold, AC not turned on.

I searched and didn't find anything like this. Before I tear my whole dash apart, is the climate control vacuum operated or part of some module? I'm old school and used to vacuum controls.

My suspicion is that the vent to allow fresh air from the front is not working and the system is sucking air through the vents back by the rear bumper.

Any ideas or guidance?

Thanks,

Xfirepop

Don't quote me on this, but outside air should come thru the Cabin Filter and probably pulls from that windshield cowling under the Wipers.

If it's pulling inside the engine air at idle and you smell exhaust, it's time to put that puppy on a lift for a complete exhaust system check.

I would also check closely the exhaust manifold at the engine.

How many miles on your Xfire...???

Thanks Pat,

I'll be checking the exhaust system this weekend. I'll also pull the cowl cover to see what's under there. I only have 59,000 on the 2004. I wouldn't expect too many problems yet. This chassis has been very faithful other than a rattle in the back that several rolls of tape didn't fix (???).

Hi. I am new here we just bought a black 2006 Crossfire coupe . Does the exhaust smell like oil a little and do you smell it as it is moving at times ? If so theres places on here that say it is cover on the left bank valve cover leak on to the exhaust manifold . This is maybe what your smelling. Check this first . Mine is doing this and I will fix it asap when the weather permits.

Are you sure it is exhaust fumes? It could be the smell of oil from a leaky breather cover or valve covers dripping on your exhaust manifold.

When you first press the RECIRCULATION button, outside air should not flow into the car. It will open again automatically after about 30 minutes when it is warm outside with no A/C running, but will open again after about five minutes if the A/C is running. You must continue to push the RECIRCULATION button while driving every few minutes to continue to recirculate only inside air.
You should inspect your in cabin filters (Your car may not have in cabin filters above the passengers foot well as it is a 2004) to see if there may be debris in there and under the windshield cowl to be certain debris has not got jammed in the intake.

I had this problem as well and must say very little about this on the internet available whilst it seems to be a common issue!! The re-circulation button is to cut air "fresh air" (air from outside the cabin) off from entering the intake gate and car's cabin. HINT - If you push the re-circulation button whilst the Air con is running you will hear an increase of the volume of air moving through the system (this is natural) and gives you a clear indication the re-circulation door/gate is working. If this is not happening it could mean a few things- 1. electrical problem, 2. re-circulation valve not working 3. Gate opening mechanism not working but most common - 4. The vacuum pipe under your battery has perished due to the acid from the battery. I fixed the vacuum pipe and Re-circulation gate is working again fine, cheap solution! So in feature I will start with inspecting the vacuum pipe first as you only have to remove the battery and battery holder and not the whole dash!! if not that .... then big work!

The Chrysler manual is not very good on this with NO explanations of the workings of the intake gate! also removing dash not well described but nice to use as guideline.

Good Luck hope it helped.

Hi There,

I had this a few years back and it turned out to be the exhaust manifold leaking into the engine bay and being sucked into the cabin.

Maybe have the exhaust checked for leaks first or Gaskets etc.

Best Regards Daniel
