Compatibility between Bosch & Valeo alternators
Compatibility between Bosch & Valeo alternators
My 2004 Crossfire coupe has a bad alternator that needs replacing. I hear it's a manageable DIY job for a non pro and refuse to pay the $1100 the dealership quoted.
Thing is - most auto parts stores only have a single part as replacement. However - when I called one they specifically asked me if my car had a Bosch or Valeo alternator. Upon checking - I have the Valeo. So my question is are these parts compatible in any way or should I just buy from the parts store that can certainly say that I'm getting a replacement for the Valeo alternator?
Ive been reading other posts but haven't seen an answer to the compatibility question. Thanks.
Oh and FYI the part is in the $190 range at all the stores.

Re: Compatibility between Bosch & Valeo alternators
Valeo Valeo Valeo. Rather than use an untested eBay seller, I took my unit to a local reliable rebuilder and got it done for ~$250. Do be sure he clocks the unit correctly -- there are different ways of putting the pieces together for different makes, and my guy used his printed reference that told him to put mine together the Land Rover way. Needless to say, his printed reference was wrong. Make sure he puts it together the way he took it apart.
If you buy the part online or from a local supplier, double and triple check that it's correctly clocked or you will be sad.
Happy motoring.

Re: Compatibility between Bosch & Valeo alternators
In my experience the two alternators should interchange, not the component parts of course, but the units. Of course its always better to stay with the OEM brand on your car.

No stock but good information to use in a search

Re: Compatibility between Bosch & Valeo alternators
So I got the Valeo part as was recommended - however there is a significant difference between it and my original. The pully is larger than mine - that is there are more grooves. Can I still use this part and seat the belt in the middle of the pully - or is this a sign that the part is the wrong part? This was a Valeo replacement for my car that was in the system at Advance Auto Parts.
Thanks for helping.

Please help me understand. Are all the parts interchangeable. Or... is just the valeo and mb. The remy is quite a bit cheaper. SRT6. Or is the wiring the issue. I really don't want to spend 300 for a new one. This alternator thing is a nightmare figuring out.

Valeo and Bosch (not MB) both make equivalent parts for our car. The NA (6 rib) and the SRT (8 rib) have different pulleys and plug connections. But Valeo and Bosch make parts for both, you just have to get the part numbers for each vehicle.
This has been covered in later threads, this is an early thread, always look for the later threads with more up to date info.
If
I did a chart which showed the part numbers for both makers for both cars.
The biggest mistakes people have made is trading in a alternator with their pulleys and then found the new part had the wrong pulley on it and/or the wrong plug connection. Stick with Valeo or Bosch, the others may have the wrong configuration.
I’ll add the chart here. Make sure it comes with the regulator. The chart was for the Mercedes SLK320 and SLK32.
