High speed chase and death.
OK who is missing?? The car had limited wheels and was on the east coast. Maybe someone was doing stupid things and got terminated. More will come out for sure.
Sad, W
dy. Youall know my position about driving crazy. 140 in a limited ??
Sad, W
I could only speculate that back end came loose and he lost it.
If not driven erratically I believe a Limited should be able to handle those speeds just fine. My guess is the driver was driving erratically due to the fact he was leading a high speed chase from the fuzz.
Black Convertable ...
At approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a black Chrysler Crossfire approached a N.C. Highway Patrol DWI checkpoint on Highway 98 near North Adams Road in Durham County when it made a quick U-turn and turned back on 98, said N.C. Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon, a public information officer. Two patrol units pursued the Chrysler, whose driver lost control of the vehicle near Southview Road. The Chrysler went on the left shoulder, overcorrected and went back across the road, colliding head-on with a small box truck, Gordon said. The suspect’s vehicle burst into flames and the driver, a man, was ejected.

I found this video on the subject today, not much left.

BUT, things can go south, as it were, in a New York minute with a poorly thought-out steering input.
Or, maybe, a couple of beers? Poor choice in either case.

I'm just sorry for this person's family at this time of year. The turkey just will not taste as good...
I agree. Mine will do this and 10 more.

Check out what happened to this C4 Vette.
Anyway's this guy probably had a 6-pack in him, he saw the cops and hit the pedal on the right instead of the left. It was a stupid thing to do.
Most of the vette guys frown on rear wings but I think it would have helped on this one.
btw, the Govt recogmended speed on the autobahn is 80 mph.
Well guys,
I have to say that I would drive my XF at 140mph, if the correct conditions existed. At 140mph you make steering changes very slow. The key here is don't drive fast when impaired, or flee from the police. Dumb move. In Texas, fleeing from the police is 5 years in prision.

These cars are structurally very sound and as we have seen from other accidents being reported on this forum, either that members have been in personally or in the news, they tend to do a pretty good job protecting the vehicle's occupants in spite of their small size. This story just shows you that even a safe car will do very little to save you above a reasonable speed.
I don't want to start a debate on NA handling in high speed chases, I might offer that the SLK was designed for the autobahn (80-120mph), not the Crosfire. Even with the SRT, the problem is keeping the back end connected. There's not much weight back there and they swing around easily..
Check out what happened to this C4 Vette. Corvette crashes at 165mph!!! - YouTube.

Fact is the crossfires were designed for the autobahn just like the SLK. Mechanically it is the same car!
As for the back end... that is why there are pop up spoilers just like Audi and Porsche. To help push the rear end down at high speeds.
Just give my 2cents after reading the two articles about it
1. He shouldn't have busted the u turn before the check point
2. Whether or not he was intoxicated , never drive drunk !
3. The police had no reason to pursue unless when u turned he did so erratically
Which neither article says the driver did
In my personal opinion I don't think he was "drunk" , but definitely had a beer or two , after seeing the cops following him adrenaline and alcohol doing there thing leading to bad decisions and over driving the car , not saying the xf can't handle 140 which i believe it can but only in a straight line , this is no f1 car or a super car it can't handle sudden movements @140 mph (which i believe must be an exaggeration on how fast the driver was going)
Especially on stock wheels and suspension
Hell I nearly spun out doing 50 merging onto the highway through a sharp corner although it was a wet road but that's not the point ,
May this guy rip and another xf bit the dust
If your intoxicated take the dwi ticket , paying a fine and losing your license for a few months is better then losing your life

This is sound advice.. the old saying - don't do the crime if you can't do the time..
Why would you say such nonsense in a crossfire forum?
Because it's not nonsense.
Fact is the crossfires were designed for the autobahn just like the SLK. Mechanically it is the same car!
They were designed by the british for American roads. Aerodynamically, they're different which matters at 140mph.

I'm not knocking the NA. It's a great high-performance car. I drove one for 3 years and thought it compared well with my C4 Vette and certainly wouldn't mind owning another one.
