Been there, tried that.
Then you might be able to handle a slightly larger pothole before you put the tire into the fender.
( I also tried it the other way : 18" fronts all around. Works, but looks extremely funky. )
If it warms up enough today ( 18 F right now ), I'll slap a 19 back on the front and post some pictures.

I expect that D-C design engineers would have worked out handling, performance and clearance issues for the staggered wheel sizes. You mess with them, and your change the characteristics of the vehicle. Some drivers have gone to 18" all around with snowtires for winter driving. However, other than slightly larger rubber, most keep the staggered design.
