power steering ruining tyres!
Hi all,
i'm a new member got my crossfire 2 months ago and am loving it! Although i had my first run in with the dealer this week!
My tyres are being scrubbed on both the outside fronts, i thought it was wheel alignment , the dealer checked it and said it was perfect.
So i took it to an independent garage and the readings were showing that it should be wearing on the insides!!!
Anyway, we worked out that it was when you put full lock on the wheels scrubbed on the outsides.
The car has only done 7,000 miles and the power steering is ripping the tyre sides to shreds on the factory fit continentals.
Is anyone else having this problem??
What can i do??
Thanks
Justin

here's a suggestion, slow down ! european designed cars have very tight steering radius's and can do that, we have a Crossfire and a Volvo, it is perfectly possible to scrub a tire off a volvo if you try to turn too quickly.. the Crossfire has 18k miles completed and the front tires are half way worn, the rears are maybe three quarters now..
I am showing a bit of this prob but, not to the same degree. Used to be a guy on this form who did rally cross (I think thats what you call it) and he was over 20k on a set of pilots

also, as mentioned above you can rotate the tires side to side to maximize the life of your tires if they indicate significant wear on the outside tread.
The problem you describe is caused by excessive toe-in. Make sure your dealer actualy has the proper alignment machine to check 18" and 19" lip-less rims >> many of the Chrysler dealers do not have the necessary equipment. I had the same problem with my car and called DC customer service and they hooked me up with a dealer that could do the alignment. After you get the alignment done, make sure you have the tires rotated side to side, the treadwear should even out within about 3,000 miles or so (depending on how bad your "feathering" is).

I had a similar problem. It was discovered by the dealer at 3000 miles. The problem was as Steve described it ... excessive toe-in. The dealer corrected the alignment problem and replaced the tires free of charge.
