Default Strange noise from driver side rear on acceleration/shift.

Hey guys, you’ve all been a tremendous help so far on helping me fix the issues I’ve had, and of course as soon as you get it all fixed, another pops up. I’ll try and be very specific. The car is an 04 coupe with 120k on it. The other day, upon accelerating out of my driveway, I noticed a slight “springy” type sound coming from the rear of my car on the drivers side. It happens when I go over bumps occasionally (sometimes it makes the sound, sometimes it does not) and when I accelerate or shift. I looked under the car, and from what I’ve seen everything seems to be intact. I have new KYB shocks all around (less than 10k miles). I did have a rear passenger side shock that blew out on me about 2k ago, and it kind of made this same noise, but it made the noise over every bump, not just some here and there. I thought it might be the driveshaft, but it wouldn’t make sense for something to happen under such light acceleration. If anyone needs anymore details or anything please let me know, and if anyone has guess or things to check, please let me know too. Thank you guys.

(edit: it makes the sound that rubbing your finger down a comb would make, but only one or two prongs at a time. Sorry it’s a tough sound to describe)

if u changed wheels check the lug bolts
on your exhaust did u use a screw clamp anywhere (they work loose and make a loose metal noise
center bearing on drive shaft or boot on center bearing
e-brake cable rubbing shock or loose shock

My guess is the resonator or the muffler or the cats have had too many birthdays. I would have an exhaust guy look at it to determine, could be a cheap fix.

Hey guys, just to update the thread. Still no solution. Checked the driveline for play and found it to be minimal, unless I didn’t check right. A little update on the sound: it happens under initial acceleration and Shifting, sometimes from reverse to drive, or just in regular up/downshifts. It sounds like a hollow metallic clunk, like someone tapped the middle rear (right behind the bulkhead) with a hammer. Minor slip in first gear, or when engaging reverse sometimes. Really do not know what to look for :/

doesnt seem like a problem with shocks or cats, since the rattle only happens for about 1 second when I press the gas. Thanks for all the suggestions so far

Are you sure it isn't a motor mount?

Just want to update this thread one more time. Went to take the rear tires off, and the right rear tire lug bolts were loose. 4/5 of them could be taken out with my fingers. Surprised the wheel didn’t just fall off honestly. The people who installed my last tires didn’t torque the bolts properly. I definitely should have checked but I was so excited to test the 285’s it didn’t even cross my mind. The noise is gone thankfully! And thank you all for the help this serves as a great warning, always hand torque the bolts after you get your tires installed.

I hope there was not too much damage to the bore of the wheels.
I get my snow tires on my wife’s car changed to summer tyres at a shop in town and the owner always comes our and checks the torque on the the nuts before I drive away, A comforting touch I think, I had my Crossfire tires all replaced when I got the car and one guy installed the tires on one side and another guy did the other side. I checked the torque on the studs when I got home, one side was too tight and the other side were just basically just finger tight. I mentioned this to the manager when I had some other tires put on a car before selling it and he just shrugged his shoulders. The tire prices were good but that’s the last time I go there.
You must check the torque yourself after the tires are changed.

I believe the torque for the limited wheels is 81ft/lbs each, is there a different torque setting for the SRT-6's? Just a Q for all.

Not to my knowledge, I use 80 ft.lb.
Many settings of torque etc are odd figures because they were converted from metric sizes.

When noise comes up right after a visit to the tire shop, we would have suggested checking the wheel bolts right away.

What 285's you get ?
On OEM wheels ?

I got a set on Ebay, can't remember the name right now. I always usually check but i just forgot, and the tires were on for around a month before the noise popped up.

Glad you got the figures out.
Loosing a tire is no fun, the bigger the tire the bigger the stain in your pants.
