Exclamation Strange Noise From rear?

I test drove a crossfire today and there was an odd whining noise coming from the rear. I was just wondering if anyone has expierienced this? It only happens when you rest your foot against the gas pedal. Thank you for any advice/input!

In my experience, whining from the rear is from a bad pinion gear in the rear differential.

Is this a used car? Is it a manual or an automatic?

Pinion gear repairs are expensive.

In any case, whining coming from the rear of the car is definitely not normal.

Does it appear more noticeable at speed? I had what some describe as a "humming" noise coming from the rear end. Mine is an '04 and from this forum I learned that it was common with some of the early builds. Took it to the dealer and they changed the rear differential under my MaxiCare warranty and voila - no more noise. Just the sweet sound of the exhaust.

It is a used car but it is still under the powertrain warranty. It is a carfax certified one owner and the book said the warranty would transfer to the second owner. Would this repair be covered under that warranty?

addie read through these threads it will give you all the information you need to know about "gear whine" in the differential. Early 04 models had a faulty differential that eventually whines due to misalignment when driving at higher speeds. Its covered by the powertrain warranty if that car has it. Its a one day fix. However if its not under warranty forget it, the part costs about $3000. Make sure to read these threads...

P.S. there is not doubt in my mind thats what the problem is, the whining occurs when you press the gas pedal, thats a dead give away.
