Default Crossfire key replacement

Does anyone know where I can get a key replacement? My key went bad and now I need a new one. The only places I've been able to find one is through Mercedes and that costs around $800

What do you mean when you say your key went bad?

Call Rob at Needswings. I got a replacement key from him and it works great. Just look up needswings on the internet for contact information.

My wife found our xfire on line at what we thoutht was a steel based on condition, Advertised as not running. with just a little researched read about the RCM issue. as benn turning wrenches for many years i thought that's a simple fix. we went to look at the car and thought WOW great shape. must have been spent the nights asleep in a garage it whole life. anyway we found out the RCM trick was done and didn't help, perhaps security issue? we got the car and got home. I trouble shot for a day and half and discovered the SKREEM issue was next. I called many places to find no one wanted to work on it and no support was out there. ^$#@$%&&. then i found this forum. same as when i converted my two up goldwing to a trike. the professionals on a forum, what a god sent. contacted NEEDSWINGS three weeks later it fired up. other than some other issues that need TLC mom and i are happy to hit the road. doesnt matter who is out there you will supply and demand for everything. with what we have been threw it will come down to fix it or not fix it. time and money go into research thus increasing the cost of many things we buy every day. at some point I think the price of fixing this issue will come down. however the damand for parts will increase. I have seen a bunch of these XF in salvage yards in breat shape (just wont start). with that said how long before parts are no longer availible. I will say as others have it comes down to how much are you willing to spent to drive it. We are happy with the investment so far for the repairs to the SKREEM system. If this should happen again in a short period of time that may change out views.

I want to thank those who post and share helpful info on the site.

The only parts that are getting harder to find are body and interior parts since the mechanicals are 2003 SLK 320.

I don't see a lot of either, but sure seems to me that the SLK320 is more rare. Wonder why MB still maintains stock ?

My replacement key is a Mercedes keyfob the previous owner bought from Ebay for cheap, along with a new blank key. I would go that direction. You just need to get the new blank cut to match, install it on the fob and the programming seems easy to do on your own assuming you have an original keyfob.

I think it's because a lot of other models overlap the R170 platform, using many of the same parts. Keys, suspension, engine parts, electronics are shared across the board for quite a few models in that generation of Benzes, meaning ample parts for all. One of the reasons why I decided to buy the Crossfire, because for everything except the exterior and the interior from the bulkhead back, I would have easy access to mostly affordable parts.

There were 33,000+ SLK320s made. From the SLK200 to the SLK32AMG some 400,000+ cars were made. They shared lots of parts.

Please make sure you mention if the FOB case is replaced that the RFID chip is brought to the new case. Losing that chip has been very expensive for many members who weren't aware that chip MUST be transposed into the new case. Also, there are quite a lot of FOB boards that may not be the right frequency (if everything else is working correctly) that would result in the locking system by that FOB, not working, because it isn't the correct frequency for the receiver. Again, many members have purchased FOB's thinking it looks like it or it doesn't work due to a damaged board/different frequency only to find the results are two steps backwards with a different situation than a FOB case being broken (plus the original issue if there is one).

I think you have mixed up what you were told, there must be thousands of signals to open the doors, that is what security is.
My replacement for my old and tacky OEM fob has a Mercedes logo on it, it also has the original key, original transmitter and original chip inside it.
I think I read somewhere that Chrysler wanted a different fob signal range than the Mercedes or more than likely Mercedes dictated a different code range for the Crossfire. The chip programming is a tale all on its own on which a book could be written.

I'll double check on how he replaced it, he told me he bought a used key fob on Ebay, new blank and programmed it himself. I tested it after your reply back, it works perfectly, starts the car and opens the doors.

FYI The round Chrysler logo on the Xfire key fob is glued over the Mercedes star. How do I know? One came off years ago exposing the star. I have it around here somewhere; when I find it I will post photos.

Both of my many years ago replacement key fobs no longer work, so I use the key to lock and unlock the doors. A nuisance.

Default Land of the non-existent key replacement

I know this is a longshot but...does anyone have a spare key fob with transponder?

I am sure this is a typical situation these days. Fob was damaged and the transponder lost. I have been waiting nearly a year to get a replacement from FCA and most, if not all, 3rd party sources have any idea when one will become available. I'm just looking for any last options prior to pulling the SKREEM/PCM units from the car and sending them in. Considering the latter option - any recommendations?

It doesn't work like that. The keys for other cars don't work on other cars. Mercedes no longer makes keys or skreems so it is not possible for Chrysler to get one.

You either buy a complete used set from eBay with skreem, key, ecu, locks etc or send your ecu and skreem plus door lock to the https://themercedesswapshop.com/

And if you live in a state with inspections the set from another Crossfire will not work because it is programmed with the vin. of the donor car. Bite the bullet and send the parts to MSS.

Contact Josh at: https://themercedesswapshop.com/ And he can talk you thru how to order a new key.
And order TWO, so the next time you loose/break a key, you can send the remaining good one to him to be duplicated. Since you have no transponder to send him, you will be sending him the lock cylinder, SKREEM and ECU this time.
