Default Anybody know what this is?

I have noticed that I sometimes get a chime when I am driving and I hit right around the 40mph mark. I don't notice anything else but this chime. Anyone know what this is?

Does your wing deploy?

Not as far as I know. I've not paid attention. It usually deploys around 50mph.

The chime will occur if a warning light comes on in the instrument cluster.

No warning light appears. I learned something just today. Just right before hitting 40mph the chime sounded. No wing deployment. No warning lights. What's really interesting is that it happened in the exact same place that it has happened before. Same street. Same location. Now, explain that one.

Cue the eerie music, and race by without looking.

The wing should deploy around 60 mph.

Hello all. Well, something strange happened this evening. I was driving the car and heading home when the beep sounded on the same roadway it has before but probably 1/4 mile ahead of the normal spot. I saw the odometer window change to an oil can with a wavy line under it and a blinking HI. This is the first time I have ever seen that. A little further towards the house and the odometer went back to normal.
Could it be that oil is getting sloshed around enough to set this off in the places it has been going off? But all the other times the odometer window never displayed what it did today.

Yes, I have. The oil level is at the very upper (MAX) end of the reader before the cable. So, I imagine it might be just a tad too full.

Is there anything different about the terrain where it occurs? A sudden dip or steep incline or decline?

The street it happens on is downhill. It's probably a good 20 degree decline. I might make a left turn onto this street about 50ft. before where it happens. Yesterday I had gone another way and didn't make the turn. But probably a quarter mile before the area I had gone through an intersection with a good dip.

A level surface the oil level should be the same at the front and back of the oil pan but as the angle changes the level gets higher on one end and lower on the other. Fluids are affected by centrifugal force same depth or quickly going around the corner could temporarily affect the level at the sensor. If the level seems a little high Open parked at surface it probably wouldn’t hurt to take out a little bit of oil.

I always take this as a sign that the beeper is working fine. Sometimes I hear a beep seemingly for no reason, no CEL light, no codes, no problem.

So I would say the oil level sensor is telling you that there may be just a bit too much oil in the engine since the HI alarm is showing with the alarm sound. This system can be sensitive and has happened to me before. Some time back, after I performed an oil change where I added 8.5 quarts, I was driving around the roadways & twisties up near Fontana Lodge during a Crossfire weekend event. I knew that 8.5 quarts was just slightly more than the 8 liters recommended, but it wasn't that much more. Turns out that whole weekend, the HI level indicator & alarm kept going off as I drove those roadways. Got back home and siphoned out about a 1/2 quart. Never had the HI alarm again. And to this day, whenever I perform an oil change, like so many other Crossfire Owners, I only add 8 quarts of oil. The dipstick always shows full in my car. And as a follow-up, whenever I've gone to Fontana Lodge for a Crossfire weekend event since that time, the HI level warniing light & alarm never showed.

Page attached out of the Owners Manual discussing this oil level system alarm.

That's what it sounds like. I just wonder why the information in the odometer window didn't come up before. I think I have about 8.5 quarts in there. How did you siphon some out? I don't have anything that could do that.

Find a Lawn Mower oil siphon kit that comes with a long tube. Most lawn mowers nowadays require the oil to be siphoned out rather that drsined from the engine. Check the local Harbor Freight stores or
Amazon"><span style=Amazon" /> Amazon">Amazon
for one. Doesn't have to be motorized or anything fancy. You only need to remove 1/2 a quart. The one I have has tubing that is small enough to pass thru the oil dipstick tube to the oil sump. Otherwise, you will need to remove the oil filter housing (don't need to change the oil filter) & insert the siphon tube down thru the filter housing.

Since the HI Level alarm is only going off on a short section of road you drive everyday, and it's not alarming consistently as you drive the car elsewhere, I might not do anything until the next oil change. Then only put in 8 quarts during that oil change.

Later,

Here is the oil extractor kit I bought for lawn mower service and other needs. CTA Oil Extractor, Model 7450

The CTA Catalog has quite a few automotive tools that one might need servicing cars.
