Oil - several mini issues - is my car a lemon??
I own a 2005 red limited coupe. I don't think it's the lemon my husband thinks
it is.
Besides the fact that my baby is in the shop getting a new oil sensor I was
wondering why this vehicle takes 8 1/2 quarts of oil. Car runs great but I am
a little upset that so far I've had to replace silly sensors in the car that were
not working right. Is this normal? I personally think the car is too great to
be a lemon but that's just me. I feel so much better talking here. You folks
have given me some great ideas about my car. Thanks for listening.
Messey, It's been my experience that when it comes to electronics, if it isn't Japanese, it's going to fail. I know some people will argue with me, but that's just my opinion.
All I can tell you is don't "sweat" the little things. I'm sure it's a nuisance having to take the car into the shop repeatedly, but eventually they should get it taken care of for you. This car is too much fun to give up on just because of the small stuff. Good Luck.

8 1/2 quarts is the right amount (give or take a half). One reason you can go 7,000 miles on an oil change is the use of so much synthetic oil.
Messey, have not had any sensors go bad or act up. I would be extremely cautious of the mechanics that have very little experience/knowledge with these babies and start blaming/replacing sensors just because they don't have a clue. If you are having very many sensors failing, then I would think maybe it would be something common to all, like the main computer or something.
But, if what they are doing fixes your problems, then you can only hope that all of the sensors will have been replaced soon.
Keep us informed.

My old GTV6 also took 8 quarts of 20-50 and every time I took it in for an oil change, the mechanics would think I was nuts for telling them it took that much. BTW the motor was a smaller 2.5 v6, but it had over 200k miles on it and it still ran like a dream (till it ran into a truck).

Nope, it's not a lemon. Sensors fail. Hopefully your mechanic will do a good job for you. As far as the oil goes, a large amount is good for you in the long term because contaminants stay more diluted and also it (the oil) will stay cooler because it doesn't have to circulate through the engine as often. Trust you FSS indicator.
Is the oil sensor the only problem you've had? Hmmm... can't be 100% all the time.
8.5 quarts of oil with a new filter is the correct amount.
8.5 quarts of oil at 7,000 miles between oil change on Crossfire beats 5.0 quarts (and filter) at 3,500 miles between oil change on anything else.
Crossfire wins again!

I have a feeling in about two or three more years we will really be talking about sensor problems, as well as all other things electrical.
It might be worth extending the 3 year/36k mile warranty for just this reason alone.
I change the oil myself and I always add 8 quarts. Seems to do the job just fine. I thought it was weird that it takes so much oil, but then I got over it.
