5th Annual Fall 2011 - Tail of the Dragon GTG - Sept. 30, Oct 1 & 2
yes, it is a benefit...no trucker I know would want to end up on that road...no way, no how... Hell my air ride would hang me on the first turn up...lol...

I'm sure that truck driver is living in his own sort of hellish thoughts about what happened.
I think Doc brings up some very good points about bigger signage (I say lighted as well) and notices about fines. I also agree they need to make sure if they make a mistake they have the ability to turn around in multiple areas to include the final warning.
Anyway, this wasn't posted against truckers, one of my relatives is one. But I do believe this is the benefit of the truckers as well.

There are signs warnings both Truckers and cyclist about the conditions on 129 at the Dragon. Both pay the taxes that support the road. Both can decide if they wish to use it.
I am wth truck drivers like Steve and Doc on this. 129 is their road too!
Question 1) Would cyclist and sports enthusiasts pay for the maintanence of the road without the tax support of the trucking industry?
Question 2) Should this discussion not be in the political section?
WHEIO! WHEIO! CENSOR ALERT!

As many of you know, Molly and I had illness in the family and were unable to make the Dragon. With all the commotion and travel, I did not cancel my reservation at Fontana in time and was going to forgo my one nights cost.
I emailed Tim Gamble, the facilities director and explained what happened, he graciously allowed me to change my reservation to the Spring instead of charging me the penalty.
I wanted everyone to know how great the lodge and Mr. Gamble have been over the years.
For anyone we have spoken with, I wanted to let you know that Pappa passed away last night at about 3AM, peacefully and pain free. After a FULL 88 years, he was ready and passed in a dignified manner with family around...

It brings comfort to know that he passed away comfortably with family by his side.
We all can only hope when our time comes we can go this way.
Missed ya both at the Dragon but hope you can return in the Spring.
I'm happy to know that Fontana Lodge worked out a solution with you regarding your reservation.
Take care both of you
Gary
John, I hate to hear about his passing.
If you or Molly need anything, let me know.
I will be praying for you both.

DONT GET IN MY WAY AND YOU WONT GET RUN OVER!! rant finished
Posted speedlimit is 30mph which is a quick pace, much quicker than most Harley's we get behind. Technically the speedlimit is 65 through there, at least until you get to NC, but that's another debate. Either way 30mph going around one of those corners into an 18 wheeler is a bad accident.
you won't be going around those corners pulling a '53' box...like I do... The air suspension will lift on the off camber corners, and you will be like a turtle on its shell...going no where... The photos I have seen prove that...now a 48, 42, on down with day cabs certainly could make it...but it would be a lot of work...and unless you had to get to some work site, why would you even use that route. I can see low boys, dump trucks, flat beds carrying supplies, but a '53 ft box has no business on those roads, let alone a sleeper cab like I have...add the two together and it spells trouble... Steve was just venting with all the BS we put up with on a daily basis, not necessarily the Dragon... You get my age, you just shake you head and roll on....after awhile it just gets comical... what they don't know is todays trucks have just about as much power and speed, and braking as any car, and they are surprised when they cut me off then speed off only to find me in their rearview mirror...ooooops......

Blessings to you two, John. I sure hope I'm there to see you, at the next Dragon that you make.
John and Molly
