Default First "Issue"...and it's a Biggie!

Other than my own doing (backing into a rock), I've been so lucky with my car...not a problem or concern...however, I live in the Seattle area, and as the news has shown, we're getting drenched. I noticed my driver's seat seemed damp. The slacks I was wearing were also wet. I drove home today, and looked all over the inside of my top...no leaks...no water...tight as a drum...so, I moved my seat forward and brushed my hands behind and under the seat and carpeting...SOAKING! I actually had puddles formed under the seat and yet, the heater was running just fine! I cannot figure out how in the world the water is getting in. I did have my door sills installed by my dealer. They said bring it in asap. The traffic and weather is horrific, so I am going to wait until it dies down a bit and then I'm taking it in. Going out of town to Palm Springs for the weekend and leaving on Thursday...so, I'm okay without a car for a few days. Any ideas, suggestions...thoughts as to how water is getting to the carpeting? It's just the driver's side...not the passenger...all dry on that side of the car. Argh!!!

Maybe there's a drain plug on that side that’s clogged and not draining properly. Or maybe there's a plug that should be there and isn't. Just a wild suggestion. Let the dealer get it up on a lift and see what the underside looks like. I'd also try and get it there in the rain at its worst. Don't wait for the weather to improve or for the car to dry out, then they'll say they can't duplicate the problem.

I am wondering if they messed with the door seal when they installed my door sills. I ran across a thread where a guy had installed an XM radio and he ran a wire under the seat...etc...and he had the same problem. They re did the door seal and the problem was solved. I am worried about the carpeting getting moldy...I would be so upset if it started stinking...I have a vacuum extraction and I'm going to get to try and extract the water.

Oh man - does not sound pretty!!!

Is this the first time it's rained since you got those sills installed? Maybe something worked itself loose? If the dealer said to bring it in ASAP, then you might want to approach them about cleaning up the carpet, too? I am sure if it's tied to work they did then they will do that without a doubt.

Good luck Stace and keep us posted!!!

It's very doubtful that a door seal problem would produce that much water inside unless it was on the top near the window. Check the top seal in the back where it meets the car. I'm guessing it's not sealing there and the water is running under the back window area and down behind the seat. Start to put the top down...when the back flips up, stop the top and inspect the seal.

I took a close inspection of my back window...no drips or water appears to be coming from that area...but I will drop the top and see if I notice anything askew.

Sharon,
We have had the NICEST summer and fall until this week. Then, in one huge storm, we had a downpour that broke all records. I had my car parked in the garage for a lot of the torrents, but at work, it's out in the elements. There is no covered parking. I do notice that when the door is opened, the rain tends to get in rather quickly. I try to do a quick step in and out when it's been so wet, but I do think some water is getting in behind my seat when I open the door. Bummer...I have had 4 convertibles over the past years, and not one has ever had a leak. I truly hope this is an easy fix...and yes, I'll suggest my carpet be properly cleaned and/or replaced if necessary. Mildew and mold is just not an option.

If you can leave the car in the garage for a day or so, flip the seat forward, soak up all of the water, and then leave the door open with a fan blowing on the carpets...that will prevent it from becoming moldy...

Golfergal,
Please keep us all posted on this issue. I'm sorry it happened to you but it could be an issue for all of us. I'm down here in sunny California but when it rains, it pours. Good luck and have fun in Palm Springs (GOLF?).

Aww jesez, not more problems? I think it's time to sell before it gets worse, I'm already on the fence with my XF. Hope you can get it fixed easily.

A seal was the problem after getting work done on the car. Interesting...

I sure hope its an easily found & fixed problem when you get it to the dealer. And if they installed the door sill and it proves to be the problem then you have every right to request they take care of it - all the way to getting them to replace the carpet. Sure you have a convertible that you drive more with the top down, but if it does not dry out properly, you are going to have a nasty smelling car.

You know, we get some pretty nasty storms down here in the Tampa Bay area all the time - just had a bad one yesterday. I have not had any water leaks with my car at all other then an occasional drop that comes from where the top seals against the door/window, but that's it. I can live with that because thats part of owning a convertible.

My fingers are crossed for you!!

Sorry to hear that Gofergal. I had a leak in our new house and the builder treated the carpets immediately. Mold build up can cause health problems (especially black mold) and it needs to be taken care of immediately. The builder steamed cleaned the carpet and applied an anti mold agent. I'm not sure if the dealer is going to go that far to fix your leak. Try looking at http://www.traskresearch.com/oxymold.htm ...good luck!

It seems that the primary issue with the Crossfire is finding proper service. Unfortunately, Chrysler dealerships appear to be no more knowledgeable about the car than anyone randomly chosen off the street.

This is greatly complicated when modifications are made - even by the dealer we're contracted to take the car to.

I'm thinking about taking my car to the Benz dealer and having them give it a good look-over (especially the alignment) to make sure everything is in order. Too bad I'll have to pay for it.

Traded mine in monday. Just way too many problems, however, other friends of mine that have them, have no problems, so mine is just the lemon in the bunch.
We had significant leaking problems and there is a tbs on all the weather-stripping. We had ours replaced 3 times before the dealer called to tell us it had been redesigned. Since the last replacement, no leaks, even in a no touch car wash.
Now we have the new Wrangler 4 door Jeep, I already miss the electric top.

I'll still be hanging out here and checking in. My friends that own them are not members, they count on me to keep them abreast of things. It is a great group. Don't have to quit do I?

Hi Bill, so sorry that your car gave you problems. I have not had any issues other than this leak. Can you please let me know what type of leak you had and/or the tsb on this issue? I talked to my dealer today and they were a bit vague on what their plans are. They are checking the seals, and have some parts on order. If you happen to have any of the dealer paperwork that was generated with your roadster, I could perhaps give them a call and direct them in the right direction. If it's too much trouble, I can completely understand.

You can private message me and I'll send you my email address.

golfergal - sorry to hear about your problem. Hope you read all of the posts on the one you highlighted from Bob's. It goes on to say he created the problem with some wiring he ran. If your seat is wet that would indicate the leak is coming from above the line of the seat and dripping down onto the floor. Since I have a coupe can't help you much but I do hope they get you fixed up quickly.

Pat

Well, were they able to find the source of the leak? I hope you got it resolved.
I had mine out this Friday and it rained heavily all day with extreme winds. This was my first time I had it out in the rain. I was a bit concerned about finding some sort of leak, but it was completely dry. Thank God.
