Default Convertible Top Material - Old Wives Tale?

My '05 XF is the first convertible that I've owned since my '65 Austin Healy 3000 in 1970. I was washing the XF tonight and my neighbor stopped over and told me that using car wash on the top will fade the color (black) over time. Is this an old wives tale or should I not be using the car wash on the top?

DO NOT use car wash on your top!!! Purchase a good top cleaner and protectant. Either one of the products listed below are great.
