How to replace gas cap...no, seriously, how?
My check engine light has been coming on lately, throwing the "loose gas cap code" as I call it. I bought a new gas cap and am attempting to switch the old one out. My question is this: what do I do to take off the original cap and put in the new one. There is a round piece of plastic that appears to attach the cap to the fuel door, does this unscrew, pop out, something else??? I just don't want to break it, please help.
I think you get the "New/Original Question Of The Year" award!!!
I don't know the answer but it will be good to know. Hopefully you haven't stumped the forum and someone will have the answer.

Well, I now know how not to replace it. My husband took a screwdriver and tried to pop off the plastic disk holding the cap tether to the fuel door flap. He did, but now it is broken and will not go back on. I do not recommend this method.
Later this afternoon I will check it out and see if there was a better way to do it for future reference!

My gas cap leash broke some time back. Hasn't occured to me to replace/fix it. I just snipped off the ends to keep it out of my way when using the cap holder on the door...
Lefty loosie, rightie tighie.
Typical...the husband "fixes" and the wife takes the butt-busting having to ask directions. Good luck Cheryl and please keep your husband away from power tools and sharp objects.

It would appear that the plastic piece that broke was partially frozen and that is why it had broken. I think that had it been thawed, the screwdriver idea would have worked to pop it out. I had the CEL reset, and it hasn't resurfaced. However, it is my understanding that the car only runs the diagnostic test when the car is sitting idle for more than a few seconds. As my roundtrip commute is only 4 miles, the car has not yet run the diagnostic to check for "evap emissions". I guess this weekend I will find out if there is some other problem.
