Caught in the rain! Update
Okay. I followed all the hints, dried everything out. Luckily I had an extra set of mats.
Nothing smells and I feel that I have a bionic nose and cannot tolerate bad smells. Everything is working fine and I am keeping my fingers crossed. Either it had not rained as much as I thought or my actions that morning helped. I put the top up right away and put the heater on high and left the car running for about an hour. That was a tough thing for me to do - I try to be a green as possible for someone who owns a sports car. I bought a reel mower to cut my grass (dumb move- it does not cut the grass very well) so my neighbours were probably thinking I was nuts to leave my car running for that long.
I will let you know if any problems arise.

...I got my car second hand...and I've noticed a heavy order (musty) smell when it rains. I'm thinking the rag top was wet at some point and someone stowed it while wet. I took some baking soda to the carpets and seats...thinking that may be the issue. FREBREEZE 40 gallons !!! Still...sigh. You may be ok with a light "soak". Just AIR OUT as much as you can... Place the car in the SUN LIGHT. It'll dry up...
Not to worry about the "gabs"....it's all in fun. Surely we've all done some ..and I'll use the term "Mindless" things. Good you asked though. Out side the jokes..you'll get some good info from some of us that "been there...done that "....

Happen to me the Sunday before last. I found that paper shop towels and a car wash vacum work OK. I also let it dry out all week with the top down and no floor mats. So far no problems,knock on wood!!

I used to get caught in the rain without a top in my old Jeep all of the time. Luckily, it had drain plugs in the floors and the carpet could go in the washing machine.

I drive my coupe in the winter, and the snow melt overflows the rubbermats and gets into the carpet. I put newspaper under the rubber mats and it catches the snowmelt and wicks up the water in the carpet. The first time I saw water in the footwell of my baby I almost had a heart attack. LOL.

You can also buy absorbent pads that are used for oil/fluid spills. They are great for under the carpet during winter as well as for rain etc. They soak up a lot, very fast and hold it inside.

As for RAIN, I normally keep my car covered while at work to protect it. Usually we get unexpected summer rain showers. I have learned to keep a heavy duty leaf bag in the trunk so I don't run the risk of having to stow a sopping wet cover in the trunk and getting everything all wet.
