Manually Putting Down Top
Hey guys, I havent been on here in a while since Ive had school.
I took my Crossfire into the dealership near my house " Stone Mountain Chrysler and Dodge " to get the top checked out since it would not go down...To make a long story short, after about 60 days in and out of the dealership, they could not fix it. We went to our lawyer and they are giving us money for our wasted time since the mechanics just cant figure it out. So I was wondering, is there any way I can just take it down by myself to cruise around in this nice weather? Any help would be much appreciated!

I think that would be a good idea, its just after so much wasted time dealing with the rudest people at this dealership , having to go to another would be another pain, exspecially since I leave for school in ten days.
You mean to tell us that all a dealer has to do is say they won't fix it because they don't know how? Are you under warranty? If you are the dealer should get help from Chrysler Engineers if necessary.
Thankyou Loosecannon, appreciate it.
Fp, Yes I am under warranty..for about a year I have been taking the car in and out for the convertible top..it works a day, then doesnt..then he ghetto rigs it..then it doesnt work..so finally I just said its time for the lawyer. The Service Manager told me time and time again he was calling the Chrysler Engineers and seeing what he could do, but never got back to me with any real important information. They even got a certificed crossfire technician, and he couldnt figure it out....I really just dont know what to do anymore

The fact that it sounds like "he" knows how to rig it, he should have a very good understanding of the general problem.
hmmm... I would recommend getting with a regional rep for Chrysler and express your dissatisfaction with the ability of this dealer. While I understand it may be a pain to go to another dealer, you can call them and try to explain the problem and what the inferior maint shop was doing to rig it and see if they can explain it. I wouldn't think you would have the same problem from a Merc dealer.
Good luck and let us know how this pans out.
There is a kind of flat wrench tool, that came with your crossfire, that you can manually raise and lower the top. Sorry about your problem. Let us know what the problem was.
If you want to try another dealership in the area, try Nalley Chrysler in Roswell. They seem to know what they are doing, and I've had great successful with my 05 Roadster there. Ask for John Cockrell (678-942-0252).
Best wishes!
Best wishes!
VirusDoc, I actually took it to Akins in Winder today, which was where i originally bought the car. If they cannot fix it, I will definitly go to Nalley, Thankyou.
I would think with the manual some tools, mechanical and electronic you should be able to solve the problem on your own. I understand the mechanism can be fairly complex but, someone designed it and assemled it and it worked. By process of elimination you should get a handle on it.
I bought mine at a dealer that is "Crossfire Certified" this means that they maintain a Crossfifre certified tech on staff at all times. The MB dealer does not. I went there just to ask if they service them, and they directed me to the dealer where I bought the car. They said that just because it shares some SLK parts, the car is uniqe. They did say that they could do regular maintenance, changing the oil, etc. So find a certified dealer, and go there exclusively!
The top operating intermittently sounds like the prople I have once in a while. I have a bad sensor on the trunk panel. This is a warranty issue, and I beleive the sensor was recalled (I was told this, but I have not verified it, it may just be a TSB). The top (once in a while) will not go down, but once down will always go up. Once it went down, but the panel was not in position. There are 2 sensors, one on each side where the panel snaps in place.
COOL! I will look in the manual tonight on putting it down manually. I do not have the tool, but I am sure that I can come up with something that will work

Starting on page 195 of the owners manual is a description of how to manually lower the top.

Certified Dealer I would guess sans a non-certified one. I will have them replace the sensor the next time I bring it in for something it has only happened a couple of times, once when I was buying the car!

Oh BTW, glad your story has a happy ending
Thanks Scott, me too
Okay so I went back to the dealership today to bring them the 4 Kumhos im getting installed. I asked the tech about what happened, and apparently there is a switch in the release lever ( the thing you rotate to release the top ) that was faulty. I cant believe that after 50 days of sitting at a dealership, a lawyer, and a whole bunch of wasted time, all I needed to do was bring it to another dealership and they would fix it in two days. Holy Bajeesus. Haha

Never better said Erzer.
I went to pick her up today.
It was the first time I heard my straight pipes with my top down..All I can say is, I could not wipe the smile off my face till I parked the car at my house.
