Default Looking for some advice

My wife and I are looking at a 2007 Roadster. Since this will be our first Crossfire, I am curious as to what to look for in evaluating the vehicle. Our local dealer has 6 in stock, all off lease and the pricing seems reasonable. Since this won't be a daily driver, can you experts help a neophyte buy a good first car? Thanks in advance.

one of the biggest issues with the roadster is the glass in the top falling out. inspect carefully and also the hyd pump and rams that operate the top should be inspected. seat heaters break with regularity and self dimming mirrors also tend to fail.
the driveline on the n/a cars are just about bullit proof. you really wont have many issues there. trans sensor can leak as do the valve covers but minor fixes at best
if you have the oppurtunity i highly recommend you drive the srt-6 before you buy. the power is amazing and a much rarer bird than the limited, especially in roadster version

Thanks for the info. I've been seeing references to the SRT-6 But really don't know anything about them other than it appears they were assembled by AMG with a different engine. Is there some exterior badging that would designate the car? To be honest, we hadn't given the Crossfire much thought until we drove one yesterday and was amazed by how well the car drove. We are looking for a retirement toy that is unique and something that we both can enjoy.

James is correct....and I haven't seen any "deals" on SRT6 roadsters....so, yes I agree with what has been said already. When dealing on these cars, use the following to your advantage...very little support from Chrysler, very few knowledgeable mechanics at the dealerships, low resale value at the present time, and not much of a market for the car in general...the only place you will find any enthusiasists for these cars is right here on this forum, but not many other places....can you give us a hent at what they are asking off lease...that might help as well?

The dealer has 6 or 7 cars. A mix of coupes and roadsters. All are 2007's with the lowest mileage being 27K and the highest 40K They are proced from 17,400 to 18,800 (automatic trans). The asking price is high but he seems willing to deal. This brings me to my next question, roadster or coupe? I'm 6'6 and drove a roadster with a stick yesterday. Loved the car, but don't know much about it.

offduty again - Where're you at in Mich? I assume the dealer got the offlease '07's through a Chrysler auction. I may be able to help with some advice & a Carfax. PM me your cell# when you get a chance.

If it were me....and I am 5'7" and shrinking...I would buy a roadster with a stick for my next car....fun...resaleable...but, their prices are rediculous...I just bought an SRT6 coupe a few months ago for 15K....those cars, the ones you are looking at, regardless of what you may hear, are in the 13-14K range today...there were only 3K SRT6's made, and are becoming somewhat rare, and the coupes are in the 16K range, the roadsters in the 19-20K range with reasonable mileage. So, how does this dealer command such a high price for the limited models? If you find one you like, I wouldn't pay more than 14K for it...with reasonable mileage...which would be in the 36K or less range...just my take on it....good luck...and you will get plenty of opinions here....lol

I haven't been able to find an SRT-6. I know from this forum they are made with AMG components but I can't even find a listing in the NADA guide for the car. Can you tell me more? And the dealer is looking at the fact that this is Michigan, the weather is breaking and he has some convertables to sell. I expected the dealer to ASK a premium. I won't pay it though.

Thanks,

Found the SRT-6 you were pointing out. Did some research on some of the magazine sites, found they were very negative towards the car. Must be some bias there. I think the car looks good at rest and it seems to be an affordable "classic."

I'm going to check out the ones on craigslist, although I hope I don't meet the one ad that was referenced here on the forum that was only 4995 and driven by a little old lady to church.

Thanks to everyone for their response. I am looking forward to picking one out and joining the rest of you.

It's your budget, but if some dealer in MI or anywhere for that fact thinks they are going to make money on this car.....I will give you names of dealerships that wish they never had one on their lot....they set and set at the prices they are asking until they are shipped off to auction, or they come down on their price...I waited, and I got what I wanted at the budget I had set...just take your time and shop around...and Jim Harbor is the expert in the Detroit area for sure...he knows what he is talking about....and he certainly knows dealerships...lucky to have him to help you out....

My wife found one in Rosedale that she really likes. Unfortunately, it is a 2007 limited with 37K on the clock and the dealer is asking 18.5K for it. My research says the car is worth 16.5 to 17K. While I like the looks of the car, I learned early on to never "fall in love" until after it is in the driveway. I've had some on this thread say the cars only command 13 to 14K, so I am in a dilemma as to what a "fair" price would be.

My last investment was a 2008 F-250 diesel that I bought in S. Carolina new. The truck stickered at 52K and the dealer had a bunch of vehicles he was willing to deal on, I paid 36K. This XF purchase is new territory for me. I know the car is a 40K ride and if I could find a near-new one, I'd probably spend more. BUT, the book and the bank say the car is low teens. Any thoughts or suggestions?

at the prices you're looking at, i would most definitely seek out an srt-6 roadster. take your time and be willing to travel for a huge reward. lower mileage examples are out there (ie; definitely under 35k miles). For instance, there's one at Ricart Megamall (Groveport, OH). If you're patient, a really low mileage one will pop up. magazine sites? like what? this car is solidly manufactured in germany with great build quality and an amg supercharged asphalt...err...autobahn muncher. one ride and you'll quickly forget about those nice limited roadsters for sale (not that there's anything wrong with limiteds.) ; )

I've seen some SRT6's on Auto Trader but it looks like they are all 2005 models. Was this the only year they were made? And, I'll drive any distance for the car. I bought my truck in South Carolina. Nice plane trip down, good ride back. As for the magazines, mostly Car & Driver and Road & Track. They really pan the car. Considering its heritage, I was really surprised.

Yes, the SRT-6 was only made in 2005, although I believe there are a few 2006 models that were special ordered. Don't believe everything the magazines say about the SRT-6. Mostly they seem to hate the stiff suspension setup and the interior. The ride is definitely rougher than a Limited, but it's not as bad as the articles make it out to be.

I just bought my SRT-6 roadster on Saturday. I wanted one with low mileage being sold by an original owner and located within reasonable driving distance of where I live. It took over a year until the right one came along, but it did happen. I hauled it 600 miles home on my flatbed trailer behind my Dodge Ram Cummins, and other than having to load it in a rainstorm the trip was great.

The power of the SRT-6 was well worth the wait and extra $$ in my opinion. We looked at some newer Limited roadsters, but in the end we really wanted more power than the Limited offered. We plan on keeping this car forever, so we didn't want to compromise.

Good luck with your search!

Things to look for is how the vehicle was maintained, have them put it on a lift and look at the bottom of the car. pay particular attention to the wheels in and out, look at tread on tires, under the hood should be clean, look for oxidation on the engine.
Another thing to do that's quite important, go over the body, look for color changes and yes, get a carfax report. Mileage is also very important. If these cars came off of lease, see if they are one owner or several. the drivetrain warranty will still be in effect. In some cases you will still be able to buy an extended bumper to bumper warranty from Chrysler, it helps a great deal. Find out the car's in service date and that will be the date that the 7 year 70,000 mile warranty will cover. This should cost about $1,700 for a non deductable extended warranty.
The roadster is a great choice in any color. Lokk for the two tone interior, it's worth more than the solid color. An SRT-6 would be a dream because none were made in 07.
Any more info needed, PM me

Thought I'd add to the storyline just a bit.

Went to look at a 2007 Limited Roadster yesterday in Detroit. Car was rough, but salesman said he had a couple in the back that could still be for sale. Had a nice '07 Limited Roadster with low miles. Told the salesman I'd be back with the wife (her car).

Because I live so far away I didn't make it back last night but I did send an email offer on the car. (Thanks to Harbor, Doc and the others who posted on this thread with advice.) Didn't hear back from the salesman so I called and the salesman said: 1. He didn't get the email; 2. After I went through it with him on the phone, the offer was too low and he wouldn't present it. So I asked him to ask the sales manager for his absolute bottom line. Salesman calls me back after a couple of hours and says the car is headed for the auction at the end of the week. Is this how business is done in Detroit? Strangest thing I've ever seen.

The search continues.
