Default Smoke / Smell

Hi All,

Been a long time since I posted anything. My xfire has had a burnt oil smell for some time after driving. Very faint but there. I leak no oil and have not had to top off ever.

I noticed last night after driving 5 miles and stopping that there was smoke swirling around the fog lamps. Opened the hood but could not find anything.

I see no oil splatter or leaks.

Any ideas?

Check radiator hose on top ..... seems some members have detected an abrasion point on the hose and leaks radiator fluid. Might be a small leak, and burning off the hot engine. There is a post about this by Gary (VALK). If so it needs to be dealt with ASAP.

Could it be something that has gotten into the fog light housing and burned, something as simple as, maybe a dead bug?

Take off the engine cover and look properly. Anything we say will be a guess.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did not even think about looking under the engine cover. Let you all know tomorrow what I find.

Tha nks onehundred80. I took the cover off and there is a very slight oil leak where the oil fill is bolted to the valve cover. Looks like it needs a gasket replaced.

First time I have had the cover off.

Glad I purchased the bumper to bumper life-time warranty. I think I would have been covered by the life-time power train warranty also. I purchased my 2006 new in 2008 and this warranty applied.

Still love this car.

Ha, I am so sorry for not passing on the credit to all. onehundred80 pointed to me to see it, you told me exactly what it was and I missed it.

Sorry and thanks to all. I really am surprised that I got such accurate info so quickly with such a flimsy explaination.

I always give credit to people that have the idea and I use it, not like some here who take credit for something they learnt from someone else or even another forum.
I'm starting a thread listing problems and the solutions that I found on other forums, should be interesting as we are not alone with many of these problems.

My xfire is at the dealer getting the valve cover leak checked. Dealer just called and the oil fill side is leaking and the other side is about to get worse.

They have ordered parts and should be fixed tomorrow.

Hope they know what to do, this is my first service call other than an oil change.

Not bad for 11,500 miles in two years. I've read all the posts on leaking valave covers and this seems to be a common issue with xfires. Several posts recommend doing nothing

I got away with just tightening the screws a bit. No more leak!
Worth a try.

When you pick up your car check the covers for broken small bolts, two passenger side and three driver side. Airpark Chrysler in Scottsdale AZ resealed the covers on my '06 last October and I just today found the head broken off one on the passenger side. Parts guy at Mercedes said the five bolts are one time use, replace with new at reassembly. Within 50 miles of their leak repair job, two oxygen sensors failed, probably because RTV not "sensor safe" was used.
Helpful tip- Put a little white grease on the 5 fasteners that hold the engine cover, it goes on and off much easier.

11/18/13, the breather cover with the broken bolt, head sheared off by the dealer knucklehead and left for me to discover, was removed and cleaned up for a reseal. After removing the remainder of the bolt, probing the hole indicated it was partially blocked with RTV, that's what caused the knucklehead to snap the bolt. Using a bottom tap 5 mm x.08, the RTV was removed.

Cool Re: Smoke / Smell

Tighed1 Nice call on this issue….it’s a home run hit for sure. I do have to ask, how widespread is this issue? Did the SKL have a similar problem? Can this issue be attributed an xfire sits unused and stored for longer periods of time? What are the ballpark costs to repair such a problem if the car was out of warrantee?

When I pick up my xfire tonight if completed I'll look at the work order I have to sign for warranty purposes. This work order goes to Chrysler for reimbursement and has the total cost of repair on it. My copy will not.

I'll post the cost here.

I was thinking the same thing on how widespread is this issue. I searched this site to see what others were saying and I found a lot of posts talking about this. Several said to do nothing. I almost did just that as I have a strange feeling this is not going to get done correctly the first time.

I decided to "get ere done..." because I have a lifetime maxcare warranty on the car and I still have a year left on my 36 month warranty and has the lifetime powertrain warranty. I think I'm covered with all this.

I never buy extended warranties but could not pass the extended lifetime maxcare that was offered to me. $1,100.00. The service contract has 999,999 miles on it.

I purchased a 2006 roadster new in 2008 off of Ebay from a dealer in NC. My immediate concern was that the car had sat for 2 years. I got the car with 16 miles on it for 1/2 price and the added insurance cost of the maxcare lets me sleep at night.

This is the first time the car has been into the shop other than oil changes. My hope is that I can pass the car down to my son one day. Not too soon, lol.

Sounds like an excellent price for the lifetime maxicare warranty. Enjoy!

It is a oil leak on the small inspection plates? on the rear of the valve covers. They are installed with RTS and no gasket. Fix? remove the plastic engine cover. Remove those two covers, about 3" X 8", clean and carefully replace-- don't overpull. I have the lifetime warranity and it was covered.

I just noticed this line, 'one side is leaking and the other side is about to get worse'.
If it is not leaking how can you tell that it is going to start to leak?
It's either leaking or it's not.
Maybe this dealer has a OBD 3 Chrystal Ball.

I appreciate the dealer is willing to both at the same time. I had to wait 3-4 months until the passenger side leaked, go back, and wait the second time. No money spent, but twice the time spent.
