Default Battery Cut-Off Switch ???

Hi all . . .was looking at a xfire ragtop, and noticed the owner had a battery cutoff switch wired into the negative battery cable. The guy said he was selling the car for his girlfriend, so didn't know much about it . . . . . I am concerned that there are electrical issues that someone did not figure out. Figured it would be easier to turn off the battery, rather than track down a draw on the battery . . . . how much do you think it should affect the value of the car ???

Could take HOURS to try and figure out the problem I am thinking (maybe like $1k worth off the price ???)

Your comments are appreciated . . . .

Thanks,

Mark

Don't you just love the ignorant seller story line. "I'm selling this and I know nothing!"

There's a problem there, count on it.

Yup, that is what I am thinking . . . . gonna get the car checked out for sure, prior to purchasing . . .

Make sure to check the car for any codes...if you could have access to the car for a few days...that might help...especially if your dealing with an intermittant electrical issue.

If it's a solid problem it can be fixed...it's the intermittant ones that will make you berzerk...and can put a damper on your permagrin...!!!

Its Easy, get a small light bulb rated at 12volts and connect it with clip leads across the battery switch. If it stays lit there is a drain on the system. If it blinks and goes off the issue is not a continuous PHANTOM drain.

Just a thought I have cutouts to allow charging and preventing the car from being hot when I work on the wiring without pulling the battery terminal. Its also a theft deterrent, so it might be a no big thing.

True, but it is a stock car, owned by a woman (not that, that should have any bearing . . . but. . . ) . . . I just get the feeling there is something up with this car . . . course I need explanation from "her" as to why the switch was added - what problem did she have ? Or what was she told that she should have that added . . . . . . call me a cynic . . . but hey, if I could get the car cheap enough . . . maybe I wouldn't worry either ???

Just curious but if the battery is disconnected, wouldn't everything need to reset each time it is reconnected? I know a bad or old battery, in these cars, causes all kids of issues.

I can't speak to the car in question however I purchased my Limited from a Chrysler Dealer who took it in on a lease return. It has a quick disconnect on the neg cable. I had never seen anything like it before. Turns out there is another forum member who has one on his car too. He purchased it new and from what I understand it was on the car when he got it. From what I can surmize some Dealers added it for security reasons. I used it when doing electrical installations.............very handy and I have never needed to reset anything when hooked back up.

Dave, I've never done an ESP re-set and I've had the battery on both cars disconnected numerous times. The Nav's do need to re-calibrate, but no help from me needed, they do it on their own.
