engine stopped while driving, would not start
I have read the fix for the RCM! my question is this:
1-when i turned key to start, all symbols came on on dash, gas gauge read and temperature showed temp, but then in 2-3 seconds I heard a click and all went dead.
battery seemed ok
20 minutes later car started.
I had only driven 6 miles when this happened.
before I take out RCM, want to be sure this is the problem as I stated above
thanks
ps;just got the crossfire 2005 with 8000 miles on it. I have only driven 110 miles so far, this would of been really bad on a highway at 70mph
thanks again slarsen2::
today 1/26/11
Just got done removing RCM and re soldering the 3 pins, all went smooth except for dropping metric 10mm wrench to take off negitive battery cable. wrench was under RCM black box. got it out finally.
I also plugged into the cigarette lighter plug with 9v battery to keep all my settings while battery was disconnected.
looking at the pins, they seemed good, even with a magnify glass. but did them anyway. hope it works, really scary when it dies on the road in traffic.

Same thing happened to me 2 months ago. Pulled the rcm, resoldered the pins, no problem since. Not saying that will fix it, but many people describe the same problem and fixing the rcm seems to get the job done. Good luck.
At the time this problem first surfaced did Chrysler issue a Service Bulletin? Has this same problem surfaced in 2006 models?

After having fixed RCM I drove car for 10 minutes to warm up. I let car sit in driveway idling after 15 minutes car shut off! same problem would not start. so I guess the fix I did, did not work,
called mercedes and parts guy said modules are a common thing, he also suggested that maybe the CRANK SENSOR IS THE PROBLEM,
leaving on a cruise tomorrow, will worry about it when I get back

Crank sensor is a common problem for many mercs...(xfs) they have many in stock..
Merc for us Europeans equals mercedes
mercruiser boat engines? Merc as in ?
Sorry about that! I thought you were referring to my Merc short for Mercury, My picture on this web site shows me with 1947 Merc convertible

Just got back from cruise, car has been sitting 10 days! started right up and still runing after 1/2 hour? how can that be? Today is cooler than the other days when it died, could that have something to do with it? before leaving on the cruise, car would run only 2 minutes before dying and then would not start. what gives? if it is the crank sensor, wouldnt it die everytime?

Hi,
Ive only just registered on the site but have owned a crossfire roadster from new back in 2005.
I had a similar problem last year with my car, it would start fine but then just cut out for no reason. very inconvinient when driving.
it turned out to be a sensor for the exhaust fumes.
the sensor reads what gases are produced and cuts the engine out if it thinks it can damage itself.
In the end the sensor cost me £8 and a local mechanic from a mercedes fitted it for me.
hope that helps?

Had srt6 that all the lights would come on dash,. Could hear fuel pump come on and radiator fan come on but would not turn over. Replaced battery, cps and RCM. Then took it to dealer had a bad ecm replaced under warranty 8year 80,000 mile warranty i believe . This is part of the emissiom system ,that is why it has the additional warranty. Car would start some time. Good Luck
Wow, interesting. All I can say is, see what happens next. Like you, I would think that if it were the crank sensor it would happen all the time since the sensor affects timing. Seems like if it were the sensor you would have rpm issues. You might ask the mechanic about that. I wish I could give you a good answer. Keep us informed.

I have wondered that if you have one that is a problem if it would be possible to keep the temperature down if you wrapped some of that fiber glass/aluminum insulation around it. It sits in the tunnel and hot air rushes by it, it is screwed into the housing so maybe it gets a lot of heat from the block, who knows. It has a shield in front of it but it does diddly.
Electronic items do not like heat so keeping these CPS's cool should be a good idea.
How about a cold air intake ducting cooling air over it, you read it here first remember.
Keep a spare one and the tools to replace it in the trunk.

Had flat bed pick up car today, went to a private mercedes mechanic, once again engine ran for about 15 minutes and stopped. no sign of starting. he said if it was cps crank sensor it would still sound like it wanted to start. he immediately put in another CPU RCM or what mercedes calls K-40 and car continued to run over 40 minutes. will pick up in a couple of hours and drive home for the real test. he assured me it is fixed. I mentioned the possible poor solder joints, he felt it was the fuel relay causing problem. replace whole unit and be done with it part was $200.00 his cost from mercedes. No cost to me as I had taken out a 5 year 75000 mile extended warranty. Whew! sure glad I did!
