I went to Advance auto and they say that L25276 is the right filter. I got the L25277 because of what I read on this forum. BUT now after doing some more research it looks like it is wrong.
I believe our car is the same as a 2004 SLK 320. Is that right? IF so Advance has a 041-8169 Beck/Arnley listed for that car.
I would like to have some imput on this as I need to take this filter back if it isn't right. Thanks !

 

The 77 should be the Fleece filter and THAT is what you want. The 76 is a paper filter, it fits - but no one I know here will use a paper filter.

It'll say made in Germany on it - I just bought one for my car last weekend and changed my oil (had the oil in the garage, bought 16 quarts the last time it was $4.99 a gallon.

Looks like a paper filter to me. It'll fit, but I would not use it for the same reason I won't use the 76.





Go get the '77 from Advance.
It's a FLEECE filter and look like this:

Yes, the L25277 is a fleece filter made in Germany that you want in your car. It's a repackaged Mann filter.

 

I use a NAPA 7078 filter. It is the same fleece filter shown in this thread, and the same as provided by Chrysler or Mercedes. Napa lists it for an SLK. The filter they list for the Crossfire is paper? The normal price is about $17, but I have been getting it for $12.xx with a business discount.

 

What oil are you using that's $4.99 a gallon?

 

I buy Mobil 1 0- 40 when on sale. i paid 4.99 a quart at O'Reilly's/Checker/Autozone.

 

He purchased 16 quarts at $4.99 a gallon and got change from a $20 bill.
Let's import it by the tanker full.

Maybe we Canuks should buy a skid of the stuff and have it shipped up. 4.99??? that's cheap... I was in Dunkirk NY today doing a switch. Went into the local Walmart there thinking I could find some cheap oil since eveybody on this site says they buy their oil. My luck the only thing they had on the shelf was 0W30. I maybe going over to Buffalo again tomorrow. I think I'll hit a NAPA to see what they have to say.

I just did my first oil change last weekend and didn't read up on the oil filters and ended up with a paper one. Can I just go ahead swap out the paper filter with a fleece one?

 

You can, but the paper filters are perfectly fine for the 7k mile oil change intervals.
The fleece filter is really only better for the 10k to 15k mile intervals that MB switched their cars to after the Crossfire was put into production.

Your paper filter is fine for 7k miles to 10k miles of usage.

So far, I haven't seen anyone provide oil analysis proof that the fleece filter filters better than the paper filter.

Then again, not very many of these engines break down due to engine oil related failures in the first place.

Thanks. Guess I'll switch to fleece after the next oil change. I only put maybe 1k miles on the car a year (tops).
