I am sure my fan does not work on a cold engine and only when it gets hot enough to require coolant cooling or when the AC is turned on.

I'm a moderator over on the LOTUSELANCENTRAL forum. Although I still have my privileges I haven't posted for 4 or 5 years. I had 3 of those cars over a span of 11 years and knew every nut & bolt that existed. Reading your posts such as in this thread let's me know I'm starting over again at the bottom of a very tall hill! It sure is easier though, than before the internet came along.

NO, it does not. But very narrow pulses are sent from the ECU to the FCM and the FCM must respond with an "answer pulse" to keep the dash light off.

If the ECU wants the fan to run (say because you turned the A/C on), it will widen it's pulses quite a bit, this tells the FCM to run the fan.
