Default Latching after raising the top

Looking for advice on latching after raising the top. After top goes up and the beep sounds, pulling the top flush with the top of the windshield to close the latch seems as though eventually something will be damaged. The portion of the top that remains up snaps down when pulled very violently in meeting the top of the windshield.
Hope I explained this sufficiently.

Any ideas or advice? Thanks in advance!!

Yes, you explained it very well.
Reach up with your left hand and grasp the front portion and give a bit of a twist down as you pull the D handle. You will find you can easily control it this way.

I think you are saying that as you pull down on the handle, use your free hand to control the descent of the top so it does not bang on the windshield frame. I've been doing that for 10 years.

With some having experienced issue's with the handle pulling loose.. I also "pull and catch" with the free hand..

My first attempt to prevent the slamming down was to put my free hand between the top and the frame.
I DO NOT recommend this, as it can be quite painful.
Grasping the outside front section with your left hand works just fine.

Thanks to all for the advice. Makes me wonder why I did not come up with it myself!
