closing top caused mirror to break off.
closing top caused mirror to break off.
Has anyone heard of such a happening? When I purchased my 2006 roadster last fall the rear view mirror was just laying in the trunk. I immediately purchased a glue kit and carefully attached it as prescribed. Over the years I've probably done 3 or 4 of these on various cars without incident. in getting to know the car I was not first aware that when closing the convertible top as you pull the latch handle down to close it can go over center rather sharply as it contacts the windshield frame. A couple of days after installing the mirror as I closed the top for only the second or third time it slapped against the frame and the shock, or perhaps flexing of the windshield frame (?) broke the mirror off. My glue job must have been OK because it took a chunk of the windshield with it. I guarantee I did not bump it with my hand. I also did not exert extra down pressure adding to the pressure created by the final hinge going over center as I turned the handle and pulled it down. The force was completely created by the last hinge going over center. Since the incident I escort it down into the latch using my left hand to hold upward pressure on it to avoid this slam.
The fact that the mirror was unattached with no evidence of residual glue on the windshield puzzles me. Did the previous owner have something similar happen...and never put the mirror back on? My new windshield is being installed today. The caution I exercise when closing the top gives me confidence it will not happen again, but can anyone enlighten me about this incident?
I just had a thought..never having owned a convertible before, I wonder if in my ignorance I do not follow proper procedure. Maybe one should pause when the front is above the latch and close it at that point? Then resume and let the final tensioning of the top come from the rear going into place? Will consult the manual.....If all else fails read the directions, eh?

When putting the top up it should beep when it completes the cycle. That is when you should release the top up button. It should stop bout 4 inches from the frame. After that, not pushing the button, you should pull it down to the frame and latch it.

Re: closing top caused mirror to break off.
You either used the wrong product to attach the mirror, or you used the wrong technique. You cant flex the frame - you can roll the damn car and that frame will usually stand up to the stress - that is a safety item. And as an aside, if you are slamming the top down that hard, you should know that lowering the top to the frame is a TWO HANDED operation. Slamming the top down like that will cause problems eventually.
