'05 GTO...dusted
The 20th cent gto (not good enough to be in caps) is weak. The 19th cent GTO is official and worth speaking about (RESPECT). Ws6vert your link was appreciated. Guys talking about how they have money, about VETTE can't handle a gto and gto didn't know it was racing. Man...I told a gto to catch up last night at the local QT gas station (real talk).

The first time by 1.5 car lengths, and the 2nd time by at least 2.
The guy had no idea what the difference between an SRT-6 and a stock Xfire was, and fully expected to win. At the end I could not help but telling him it was a stock crossfire (which is semi-true) and to go tell all the pontiac boys what just happened.
What a rush. This is my first sports car, and I think one could safely say I'm hooked.

GTO would have been either a Stanley Steamer or a horse-drawn carriage.
This is the 21st century...

new GTO's? Or that it was produced in Australia, or some other reason.
Only you can answer. But, the reality is, the '04 through '06 GTO's are at
minimum as powerful and possibly more so than those of the '60s and
'70s. Given, factory reported HP was suspect during the late '60s and
early '70s, but here are the numbers as delivered stock...
'64 - 325 HP
'65 - 335 HP
'66 - 360 HP
'67 - 360 HP
'68 - 350 HP
'69 - 370 HP
'70 - 360 HP
'71 - '74 were disappointing, below 250 HP
'04 - 350 HP
'05 - 400 HP
'06 - 400 HP
Personally, I think the new GTO looks like crap. It's just a box on wheels.
But, it is as quick as the SRT-6 (maybe more, depending on driver).

Hell, all I know is that its been so long since I've been beaten, I don't remember what it was that did it. Of course, I don't generally pick races that I can't win. Then again, it so rare to find a car that will beat it, that I usually don't bother in the first place, just a waste of gas at that point...

Produced in Australia...Check
Larger power plants in '04-'06....Fact
The '04-'06 gto's are disappointing to me b/c Pontiac brought back a classic name and styled it as such. (Cadillac Catera front), built it in Australia and tried to compensate for it with more HP (Vette LS1 power plant, LS2 was a after thought). When reintroducing a heritage vehicle, do it right.
The SRT-6 skipped the minor leagues and went straight to the pros with out having the luxury of multiple model years.
Ah the GTO.
Has styling that draws criticism.
Media has knocked the handling, shifting, etc.
Limited production run.
Was poorly advertised.
Does this seem familiar? What's even worse for the GTO was that the moniker had a history behind it, unlike the Crossfire. And Pontiac could have done so much more with it - especially with the styling. Any doubts that sales would have tripled if the car had edgy styling like the Cadillacs or the up and coming Camaro? And the lack of advertising was criminal. I zeroed in on the Crossfire when car shopping last year so I didn't spend any significant time on other cars. But even if I had looked more extensively at other brands I have to wonder if I would have remained completely ignorant of the GTO. The GTO is even more of a "would of, could of" story than the Crossfire. And that's too bad because it could really have been something special with looks and performance to surpass the competition.

Those horsepower figures from the 60's and 1970 were gross power ratings. Since 71' the ratings are net. So a 400 hp net rating today would be close to 440 hp gross back in the 60's. We are truly living in the age of the highest performance cars ever produced. Sorry I'll take the 05 GTO over a 66' GTO any day of the week. And I'm an old Poncho enthusiast. See my sig and the 78' Trans-Am I've owned since 1981. Just one of many Pontiacs I've owned. I came oh so close to buying the GTO. I didn't. The reasons, Ugly wheels, no options to create my own version, just to tame looking, from a distance it looked like a Cavalier. The interior was top notch. I read where some auto journalist claimed it had the best interior ever found in a GM vehicle. Too bad they didn't make it retro, maybe then it would have sold. I'm glad I ended up with my SRT-6.

I can't knock the latest gen GTO too much. The styling is way too conservative IMO. The interior is beautiful and the drivetrain, etc. is solid as a rock. Had they made the 2005-2006 in a vert, I would have most likely bought one.
As for the battle between a newer GTO and a SRT6 - I haven't had the opportunity to run one, but I'll keep my eye out. If only for Sh*&s and Giggles. I'd be interested to see how close they are.
Same here, if they had made a vert I'd have bought one. Back then the SRT-6 wasn't even on my radar screen. I knew about it but not for 50K would it land in my garage. Stole my SRT-6 Roadster with only 275 miles on it.
