keys/fob
Does anyone know if the key/fob for the crossfire is a transponder type key? i am installing an alarm thursday and would like to get rid of the stock fob. Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm not sure what you mean by a transponder key. But here is what I know:
The fob serves three purposes.
1) the physical key, unlocks locks and turns the ignition
2) transmits lock and unlock and panic commands to the car
3) at the time of ignition, the car reads an RFID chip within the fob, and if the RFID does not match the ignition system, then the car will not start
So, if you want to get rid of your fob, you need to get what is called a "flat key" from your dealer. It is a smaller/thinner key than the fob. It will not serve any "remote" functions, like lock/unlock/panic. But it will physically unlock/lock the locks and ignition, and most importantly, it will start the car because it also has a matching RFID chip in it.
I don't know for sure, but I believe the flat keys cost about $60. If you search here in the forum, you can find the part number for them.
Just to be clear, your car won't start without two things, the physical key to turn the ignition, and the correct RFID chip within an inch or two of the ignition keyhole.

The remote itself is CHEAP! You can find them on ebay for like 40$ or so, (not positive..).. but when you go to get the RFID chip from Germany from your VIN#.. t hat's where the $$$$ piles up.. I believe ??

Oh, back to your question: the real reason they charge so much is because they can.

How do you turn the key? Is it hard? I'm majorly interested, and can I ask how much it cost to install / the unit itself / etc.
Details please !!!

- Rip apart a remote, remove the key and chip. The chip is small & black, it is next to the base of the key in the remote.
- Get a file and etch the base of the key, the side that has the small pin which holds the flat key to the base. Etching will make a rough surface for the epoxy glue to bond the chip to the base.
- Mix a small batch of Quick Set 5 minute epoxy glue. Wait about 2 minutes and smear the glue using a toothpick on the etched area. Then place the tapered portion of the chip flush with the base and let it set for 10 minutes.
- Mix a second batch of epoxy glue. Wait about 3 minutes and using a toothpick, smear epoxy to cover the entire chip. The glue will flow smoothly over the chip after 5 or so minutes. Let this cure overnight.

Thanks for the awesome info Shade! I just managed to swap the chip between my old beat-to-hell remote and a brand spanking new (prolly used) ebay fob. It starts my car just fine, which is sweet.
Unfortunately, I can't get it to lock/unlock the doors via remote. I've tried the "insert key in ignition, press lock twice and turn key to ON position". I didn't work.
Any ideas?
