I just installed the Xantec (recommended kit on here from Ebay) HID kit and the color looks great...BUT it doesn't even provide safe lighting past about 10 feet!!!! Worse yet, the patter is horribly splotchy. I really do think they are seated correctly and tried to adjust the screw to raise the projectors all the way up and it doesn't make a noticeable difference. Any advice????? Right now, I cant really even safely drive it at night.

 

The bulbs probably aren't set right in the housing. You'll have to mess around with them once it gets dark. release the clip, move the bulb in further along with turning the bulb to get proper coverage. Hold the bulb in place once to you find the sweet spot and put the clip back on

 

Is there any way to do that during daylight hours? The reason I ask is that I had a local service station/gargae put them in and they close at 5pm.

 

not unless they close all their doors and shut off their lights. Re-setting them at night is the only good way in getting proper illumination

 

I added 4 to my srt and they are great, there is some grain to the lamp but they light up the night. I was in a garage to test them and it is hard to do much in the light.

I would suggest that the garage shut the door and add a piece of white plastic sign board like those signs on the curb of any road as a reflector to observe the pattern. Pulling the headlights take work but after trying both ways I did the lamps when I added the LET heat exchanger with the bumper assy off.

If the lights are in the car, then use a mirror to see that they are infact correctly installed, it makes all the difference.

If properly installed, the bulbs have a very distinct "cutoff line" about 2 feet from the floor. This should be visible in daylight, if it is close enough.

The problem you describe is definitely mis-rotated bulbs.

well, when i can see just fine with the stock setup, then yes, they are crap.

Non projected HID's are definitely ricer crapola. Actually more dangerous than anything.

Well....this ricer debate is certainly off the intended thread topic......BUT I do agree that the $10.00 non-projector bulbs you buy at AutoZone are indeed ricer crap.....thus, it is nice to have OEM projectors for a true HID kit.

 

If you park the car nose-in ~6' away from a flat surface, the Crossfire projectors have a cut-off (a horizontal line, no light above, full light below) so the light beam doesn't blind oncoming drivers.

Well, the guy at the garage and I messed with it for about an hour and it didn't seem to get any better (spotty pattern and no distance) so I just took them out and put the OEM halogens back in and readjusted. I really would have liked to have had HIDs...but not worth all this trouble to me.

 

You took it to a garage to adjust the bulbs? Do you take it to a garage to replace a standard bulb? Really, this type of maintenance is very easy and not worth paying anyone to do. You don't even need a wrench if you're afraid of hand tools.

Yes, you had a smiley, but you have a valid arguement. This car should have had the option of HID lighting as do most other cars in it's original price range. As long as they look OEM, aftermarket HIDs are a nice way of giving the car the option it should always have had.

Yes, indeed I did take it to a local garage to install everything that a friend of mine worked at because I live in an apartment complex where it is 'frowned' upon to have your car outside in the parking area with the hood raised tinkering around. Plus, I have some simple tools, but didnt have the length necessary on the sockets to reach some of the bolts necessary to get to the bulbs. That is why. Plus, I figured it was worth it, to me, $30.00 to let someone mess with it.

I do agree your pic looks OEM...just wish mine woulda turned out the way I had hoped.

 

You never stated what temperature bulbs you got...

If you got anything higher then 6000k... well then there's ANOTHER reason.. I wish I had gotten 4300k now.

 

I ordered 8000K.

 

The 4300K is what I have and they certainly give you that factory HID look. The problem that you had after installing your kit is so indicative of the bulbs not being seated properly. I had the same issue when I installed my kit several months ago. After getting the car back into the garage with some adequate lighting, I could see that the bulbs needed to go in further. You should give it another shot.

 

It is appalling to me that this car did not come with HIDs from the factory, ESPECIALLY given that the SLK roadster version has them, AS does the 300C and even the old 300M SE!

In any case, this is NOT trendy ricer "crap". While I agree that 99 percent of the time HID retrofits to NON HID cars are a BAD idea due to blinding oncoming traffic, SOMETIMES there is NOTHING you can do about it if the model of car you drive didn't come with the option from the factory. As a result proper aiming and proper selection of color (always always always use 4300k, its the stock temperature for a REASON!) and installation can ensure you get the Xenon experience without negatively affecting others, or making it look obvious you just shoved some HIDs in there.

Xenon headlights... Number 1 option on my list when buying a car.
