Default Formal Introduction... Just drove home an '05 SRT tonight... couple of issues...

Ok so this is my FORMAL intro to everyone on this board, and this is definitely a great place you have here.

Just purchased an 05 with 24k miles, 1 owner lease return beautiful and original, it was a hoot driving it down to Tampa from Georgia.

So let me say that this will be my SECOND chance to Mercedes... Hopefully this will go better than my W211 E500 did, especially being that I come from a world of BMWs where things only break when you're the one that broke them and even when they break the fix isn't terrible. If you want to know how much I liked this little car, I actually traded a 2002 M3 Cabrio with 79k miles on it. The PRIMARY reason is because the CPO was running out and no aftermarket company would warrant it, while the XFire is fully warrantable by GMAC warranty through my loan provider. However, I'm still going to miss that BMW, it was tremendous fun but the SMG transmission needs alot of work before it's ready for prime-time.

Anyhoo..

So far my issues are as follows:
Most pressing concern... Windshield wipers aren't working at all. Checked fuses and theyre ok, is there a known issue with the wiper motor etc? Could not get them to turn on but the wiper spray DOES work.

2nd... Seems I can not get away from differential issues for very long. I've got a whine around 30 and again around 62mph. I will have to have this addressed at the same time as the wipers, but just in case there is any sort of TSB for me to show them etc. to ensure I get the proper attention I thought I'd throw it up here.

Finally for the issues. I don't know if this is an issue or not, but I noticed the idle on this little car is not perfectly smooth as glass, after 2000 RPM or so it hums perfectly, but at a stoplight it vibrates a little bit in a rhythmic motion.

Looks like I will have to replace the HU for ipod integration

Thanks for all the help and great community!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of SRT6.

Haven't heard of issues on the wipers. If you checked the fuse, maybe a loose wire?

There have been a couple mentions about differential whine, or at least some noise. I don't remember any comments about "30 then 62"

You are coming from a BMW i6 as silky smooth as they get. Now you have a MBZ (AMG) V6...yep you've felt it already. It is not as smooth at idle as the BMW. Found this out quickly when I traded my '04 Z4 for my SRT6. This is the first car I can truly say, I love. More smiles to the gallon than anything I've owned.

whine could be due to tires, whether its normal noise or irregular wear noise I couldn't say.

if the prior owner put KDW's on it, those are known for their excessive noise (not really a whine, but could be called that i guess)

theres also something called "singing bearings", which usually happens when you are anywhere above 50 mph and only have the gas depressed just enough to keep your speed at pace (havent heard of this on the crossfire, but other Mopar products have had their share.

and last but not least is a vacuum leak..

anyways.. welcome.. sorry to hear you have problems right off the bat, but I'm sure once they are straightened out you will love the car.

Welcome to the forums! I purchased a 2005 LTD Roadster, not a SRT6, with 6K on the clock approximately three months ago. I haven't had any problems other than a screw in one tire. I have not experienced any of the issues you mention. My wipers continue to work just fine and there is no "whine" at any speed in my differential. My XFire idles so smoothly that I have to look at the tach to make sure it's still running. It amazes me how quiet this car is until you hit the gas. It also amazes me how you don't realize how fast your traveling until you check the speedometer. On the Interstate, I find myself traveling well above the limit without realizing it.

Three words: Quiet, smooth, fast...

Bob

P.S. averaging 24-26 mpg with mostly around town driving.

I agree that the Bimmers I've had were smoother than the srt6 and the trim level isn't up to them but the bmw's aren't noted for their cup holders either. The 840 had one's that looked liked like they were taken out of a Yugo. I've had miy roadster for almost a year and a half and haven't had to go to the dealership for anything but normal maintainence.

Welcome!

Haven't heard anything with the wipers......
The idle is not perfectly smooth, so this is normal I suppose?.....
Mine too has a rear whine just at 61 to about 65.....

Hello and welcome!

Mine has a rougher idle than most V6 cars I've driven, I would say its normal to the SRT-6. I don't know about the wipers, unfortunately. I haven't noticed any rear end whine either.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for so many quick and detailed replies.

As far as the idle, I guess it almost sounds/feels a little like a 4 cylinder in a way, but not being an inline 6 I suppose there's definitely a difference.

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't experienced any problems with the windshield wipers, but I would recommend checking "both" fuse panels if you haven't already. I am not positive, but I think they are two independent motors, so the chance of dual motor failure sounds low. (Can anyone enlighten us?)

My 6 is pretty rough at idle. I think it's a standard feature. Even the CLS63 Black Edition has the same rough idle, and it costs $$$$$.

I have yet to experience drivetrain whine, and I can't really give you any input.

If you're in Georgia, you should join us for the "Tail of the Dragon" this fall.

Happy motoring!

I assume you are in Tampa. You should try and make it over to our Orlando GTG in July. A little drag racing and lots of fun.

Conrats. What did you pay?

I will have to try to make it to at least one of those events! I am a regular member/moderator over at Cadillacforums.com as I'm usually a Caddy/BMW guy at heart but this little SRT worked out perfect for the situation I was in (needed something still fast like my M3, but that a family member could drive who doesn't drive stick or would understand the needlessly complex SMG in the bimmer) so I've been to more than a few gatherings, we have them in Tampa quite frequently.

I would assume you could say I pay $16,000.00 for my car. It was listed at 16995 but I was also given 1000.00 more than anywhere else I looked for my trade so I consider that money in my pocket. I'm happy with it, though it seems like everyone here has single digit mileage cars!

It's really fascinating to look at you guy's sigs and see all the customizations you do to these cars, down to the little details which I find very cool.

Let me know when you do a meet up in Tampa, I'm only like 1.5hr away. I live around old people and the friends I have aren't car guru's and I don't mind the drive. I'll actually be in Tampa sometime this weekend, Sat. or Sun.

And yeah check out the SouthEast forum for our GTG in Orlando

Welcome to the forum. You bought the SRT right. Sorry I am not in that group yet. Have fun and hope to see you in Orlando GTC and the October Dragon Run in NC

Welcome!

There are plenty of us that have double digit miles on the car. I have 14,000 on mine. Mine isn't a daily driver, but a bunch of members do use the car as such. I'm trying to keep the miles low due to the terrible resale values, but I like to drive it too much. After all, it is a car meant for driving.

No drive train noise and I haven't heard of the wiper issue. If you just bought it, you should take it back and demand to have everything checked and repaired. The wiper issue is a safety hazzard and the dealership shouldn't sell a car without working wipers. That wouldn't even pass a state inspection in most states that require them.

The engines are noisy (tickers), and do idle a bit rough. Once in a while, the car will shake very slightly to the rythm of the stumbling idle. Pretty normal, as I have witnessed this in other SRTs and SLK32 AMG cars.

Cheers!
