Default Trying out the Code 3 Intake Mod

I had the dreaded transmission leak this week and took the car in for service. I decided to remove the Needswings Intake just in case my dealership wanted to give me issues, and my other mods are so “hidden” I did not think they would notice. I had previously purchased the Code 3 Pulley, Spacers, and Intake but never put the intake on instead I opted for the Needswings. Having the Code 3 Intake Mod sitting in my tool box for months, I decided to install it on my factory air intake system for fun to try it out while my Needswings was off the car. I felt it was so small, the techs would not even notice it being they as they are working on the Transmission and would only have the hood open to check/ add fluids. I must say that this mod is interesting to say the least. The car feels extremely strong with the new Jerry Tune anyway and driving it today was incredible. The Code 3 Intake doubles if not triples the “supercharger whine” compared to the Needswings!!!!! I felt like I was in a 2004 Cobra Mustang. The “whine” is very pronounced and gave you the impression that the car was faster. I don’t have any time slips or dyno files to show any difference in the two, but the “butt dyno” felt like it was just as fast and the car is more fun to drive hearing the amplified whine of the supercharger!!! Cool Piece~

Only way you would really be able to tell the difference is run both on a track, your butt won't notice a .2 second lose. I bet it does sound cool tho, its basically just an open port with some filter material facing directly at the cabin.

sick! yah i left mine on when i had my supercharger replaced and they didnt know! lol....btw, i dont know if you guys have exactly the same setup in your engine bay, but behind by intake, by firewall (on top) is lined with weatherstripping. i removed it and it much much much louder. if you havent tried it and you have that setup, i would reccomend checking it out

I've always liked the idea of the opening near the firewall to amplify the sound immensely! To me the best intake would be a main filter directly where this Code-3 mod resides for the best response possible, as long as you have something else to cool the intake such as methanol. Or if someone customizes their hood with a scoop right over it.

It is hard….if not impossible to argue that the Needswings is the best designed and performing intake for the SRT6! Dragtimes proves that!!! But….this little mod is cheap, retains the factory look and sounds great. A great starting point for someone that is nervous about modding. Obviously….I am not that guy!! I will play with it for a few days, but will not go to the track without my NEEDSWINGS!!!

I still see people saying that the Needswings is the best at the track. I've always been to the tracks since back in the 60's and what I see all the time are the fastest cars running with short ram intakes. The quickest response indeed is a short ram no matter what. This has definitely been proven. And no I'm not really arguing that Needswings isn't a good product, heck I wouldn't mind owning one either. All my cars I've owned all through the years have had short rams and CAI's, and my cars seem to launch harder with the short rams. "Short Ram=quicker response". I've at least proven this to myself no matter what anyone else says. Have any of you that use the Needswings tried removing the part that goes to the front and put the filter in the engine bay area and run down the strip a few times? Do a few runs both ways on the same day and let us know if there is truly a difference at the track. I know I get better 60' times with a short ram because I've tested them already. Give it a try, it wouldn't hurt and you have nothing to lose. It's actually fun going back and forth while sitting and waiting for your next turn to race.

I have the Code 3 installed and it does sound good. I think that it works well in the fall/winter but pulls in too much engine bay heat in the summer. I recommended to Code 3 to make a snorkel tube that drew air from the pressure zone at the bottom of the windshield but I never received a responce. I think that this would be a great intake if it added the third air draw location outside the engine bay.

I have also been watching the functional hood scoop being discussed in the for sales forum. There may be a great gains by combining the code 3 and functional hood scoop. Obviously, considerations would have to be made to prevent water in the intake.

I tried a very nicely built dual air intake by BDJ Racing my first go round. I have attached a pic from 240M3SRT6’s thread as we had the same intake. It looked sick, and posted the same gains on the Dyno as the Needswings, but we felt we were getting hurt at the track by sucking in hot air only. The filter sucking in cool air in front of the radiator is the key. If we had a giant intercooler like a turbo motor does, I think air filters in the engine compartment could work. Getting the air from out front is the best! All of the fastest SRT6 are running a Needswings, that was all the proof I needed to sell my old intake and buy one from Rob. The Code 3 is a different animal. It is a shame no one has taken this and done a back to back dyno run. If I only had a pair of K& N filters to put in my stock set up….Hummmmmm

I have tested the epitome of pulling air in from the back....open tb. Not good(sounds good though).

It would be interesting to see some dyno pulls of this mod just for fun.

I'm guilty of the same "mod". Sounds bad ***!
Did it for a short drive when I had the air cleaners off.

I like my needswing, w/ the code 3 pulley set up, and along w/ an LET custom tune to pull it all together...and if you want to continue to go after another .05-.07 seconds in the qt mile, there are cooler changes, manifold changes, cams, but that seems to be the difference, and that .05-.07 seconds can add up...its just how far one wants to take it, and how much money you are willing to spend...oh and don't forget slicks vs street tires...another expense you might want to add as well...I did a 12.6 ET w/ bad tires on a hot day...and Rob has just did .07 less than that...I think he has slicks, and all the mods mentioned...so its just up to each person to decide how far they want to take this car...obviously it has a lot of potential to get in the high 11's without NOX...now back on subject, you want as cool as air possible going into the intake...a short intake would have to come from above the hood, then you might just put way too much air in there causing other problems for this engine...this isn't the old muscle car hood scoop era...have fun modding this engine, but it is a different charactor for some of us old muscle car guys...that's why I choose to watch the test and tunes from the guys on this forum...they get it right....

I too love the sound that the Code 3 intake makes. I feel its as good as any other intake out there. But I would still use it even if I did not run as good or better then other SRT's with the same type mods as mine at the same track on the same day. It just sounds soooo good.

Speaking of Code 3 there is a group buy over on MBworld for his new I/C. The thing looks great, it is on my list.
