Default Battery warning light

My battery warning light keeps coming on when engine revs go above 4k. There's no play in the drive belt and no squealing due to belt slipping. It doesn't seem to matter if system is under full load (lights, heated rear screen etc.) or it's parked up with just the engine on.

Any ideas?

This is the third problem in a month:

1
Oil leak, needing new sump

2
Noisy water pump, awaiting replacement

3
Now this

Getting just a tad ticked off: it's a 2006 with 15k on it so it's warrantied. Nevertheless, that new 370Z is looking more attratctive by the month.

Any help appreciated as I'm not convinced about driving it this weekend

Cheers

Is the pulley on the front of the alternator tight ?

Seems to be, Stogey. Hard to say for sure but if it were loose I would imagine there would be some sort of accompanying noise as the pulley slipped on the shaft. There's probably a taper/spline/key on the assembly but I would need to check the service manual.

Try to check charging voltage while running/revving?

Alternators tend to be RPM sensitive especially if the brushes are chipped or worn with poor tension. The internal regulator also can have loose connections that respond to the vibration and act weird.......

A hot deal is to get the voltage monitors that plug into the cigarette lighter and give you a reading of the voltage while you drive. Walmart has them among others.......

That was top of my list of suspects. It's going in to Dealer ASAP.

Many thanks for the heads-up.

Cheers

I'm sure you would be able to find a buyer for your car rather quickly. Although the 370z is pretty, it ends in comparison right about there. Sorry but if that 370z sat outside for 2 years plus, it would probably have similiar issues.

Don't get me wrong Cruzinquick: I love this car - everybody loves this car but absence DOESN'T make the heart grow fonder!

3 Weeks wait for a water pump : "It has to come from Mercedes Sir", and another 3 weeks for an alternator :"ditto", is useless.

The Xfire SRT6 has only been out of production for less than two years but the Merc on which it is based, dropped off the Osnabruck conveyor belt in 2003. Parts are therefore harder to come by than they should be and Chrysler are relying on MB for supply. Now there's no love lost between Stuttgart and Auburn Hills so don't be surprised if simple maintenance spares become rarer than hobby-horse dung!

The UK doesn't have the same pool of spares to fall back on so even the basic bits are special order from MB. That's what grinding my gears: I have a car that is up there with the supercars but I can't drive it.

Disgruntled

Dealer managed to get a new alternator within a week - still way too long but I'm back on the road. Now just need to sort out the water pump and the front tyre wear problem.

Grrrrrr!
