its an inexpensive way to get a dual cai but the heat inside the engine compartment may prevent any gains you hope for

not a good idea. Heat soak, and likely makes really turbulent air since the pipes are dangling there. look for Rob from needswings post on what happens when you take the filters off of these cars.

and i suspect those are foam filters, which i have read start to fall apart and contaminate your engine over time.

it is a REAL SHAME when people use cheap DIY's on such an incredible AMG mercedes motor.

You've just changed your stock, forced, cold air system to I don't know what?, a stagnant hot air whatever? You should read the forums about cold air intakes before you jump into this. Hopefully you can re install your stock system.

You know, you could just direct the intake upward into a filter box that mates to a vented hood. Something like this, but further back:

Here's what you do: Cut out a couple of rectangles on the hood that are slightly smaller than the stock filters. Buy 2 SMS billet aluminum vents (see below). Raise the level of the stock airboxes to where the seals will fit flush against the hood when closed. Run the intake pipes to the new airbox positions, and you're good to go.

I don't know if you'll see an increase in HP over any of the other aftermarket intakes, but it will look cool and probably cost less then $100. I've always felt the long run from the front to the back of the hood reduced power and heated the air.

Indyjoe this is what I am working towards I agree that the long run from the radiator area to the intake is not the best thats what first attracted me to the code three piece, thanks for the input.

why not just buy a REAL cold air intake that has the filter sitting right behind the grill???? got to Needswings.com

if that's too much, there's quite a few people who have made their own.

you can heat-wrap your intake tube if you think it effects the gains, but i saw a 26-28hp gain with mine from Needswings. not too shabby, didn't seem to be effected by heat....

Don't bag the guy too hard for trying something different. After all Code3 sells something almost equivalent, and they know better. LOL

I think as one of the forum members stated, have this filter extract air through a vent in the hood. I think that would be an interesting experiment. I wonder how that would compare against the air sourced from the front of the car?

I've always thought that you would get much more low-end power and greater overall power from a shorter CAI intake coming direct from a hood type scoop or vent. Plus it would look kind of cool. I just don't have the ***** to cut into my hood.

Woody?

That setup would work great with a methanol or NOS kit not having to worry about heat soak.

So I think there is a lot of smart input on this site so can someone tell me why a dragster doesnt have a 3 ft long pipe on its supercharger and why would the dragster principle not work on our cars

I think what they're saying is that your current setup won't work.

I think it looks like you neutered your engine!

Look at the bright side guys..........

If you ever needed to polish something while you're out on the road, you just pull off one of the air cleaners and you have a handy little pad for applying tire dressing, wax, detail polish .........
