StarDAS Club
It's a diagnostic and developement system. I only brought up Eurocharged and tuning to describe the remote aspect of it, you plug in the hardware and someone does the rest off-site via the net.

The Xentry software CANNOT change the damos files programmed in the M.E.
StarDAS is a dealership diagnostic tool that technicians use to locate and repair problems just like Toyota's TechStream, GM's Tech2 and so on. The Xentry software that comes with Star can be used to recode and or modify some coding in all the control systems on MB vehicles.

Unfortunately, tuners keep pretty tight lipped about this stuff and for obvious reasons. If everyone and their dog had access to this, there would be thousands of people pretending to be tuners and lots of people that end up wrecking their cars because they didn't know what they were doing. It's not rocket science but it's not as simple as turning a wrench either.

I agree with everything distantpulse said above. I'm a techie guy - more so with computers than with mechanicals. So tuning just calls to me. But darned if I know where to get started.
I'd be interested in going in on this star system depending on how it works and how much its gonna cost. Does it come with a good manual? Or do you have to figure it out yourself?

Now, I have heard that the "system" is upwards of 20k and is very complex? Not sure if that is true or not. Could it possibly be just a way to scare us away? Regardless..... Along with the inconvenience of having either to pull out the ecu and ship it across the US or driving hours to get to a local dealer that can tune it everytime you make the littlest performance upgrade, it's silly and costly to me. I hate the idea of paying $600 to get a dyno tune when I already shelled out $500 for a custom tune. I would rather put my money into the hardware/software and research on what we can do to possibly build a standalone system like the diablos or buy an existing system?.....Now,having said that, do I like my Eurocharged tune? Absolutely! I think they do a great job and have tried to help me any which way possible and I appreciate every effort they have made for me. They have made my car much stronger, but do I want to rely on them every time I need to make an adjustment to my tune? No, it's an inconvenience IMO. I am just venting.....Sorry. I am sure others feel the same

There are only certain companies that have the technology to break the code on the ecu. Diablosport and such won't bite on the research and code required to read/change the ecu on a out of production and decreasing population of cars. We have tried as well...
On your other question, yes the hardware/software is ungodly expensive. We have over 50k invested so far, and we are buying more soon.
Tuning w AEM and the like is night and day between the mercedes source code. I wish it was honestly easier. It is quite an effort just to find the correct maps to change fueling and the like, and thats after having the correct read maps as it is.
Star is a fun toy, nevertheless and DEV mode makes it even cooler to change options on the car and troubleshoot problems.

and yes, the Suburu, FoMoCo, GM, Honda, and Mitsubishi vehicles have it made. the only group worse off than us in the tuning dept is Bitchass Mindless Works....

So in other words, we're screwed. lol

I work on Volvos.... Our scan tool, VIDA (Vehicle Information and Diagnostics for Aftersales) is kinda like what STaR is for MBz... Unfortunately being in the American market, our "tuning" ability is very limited whereas if we were European market or Chinese market, then VIDA is a LOT more powerful. The point I'm getting to is it costs our dealership 6000$ a month to keep the damned thing turned on, so my question is it a one time investment on getting this hardware/software combination, or are we leasing a license?? If so, do Mercedes Blue Link come with it too?
