Is An SRT6 a Practical Daily Driver (In Snow If Needed)?
I'm getting really close to purchasing an X-fire Srt6 but am still very hesitant about its practicality. If I do purcahse an X-Fire it will most likely become my daily driver. That means that I will get to love and enjoy it in the spring, summer and fall, however I live in Long Island NY and we get some pretty nasty snow here. Overall I need some SERIOUS opinions about whether or not this car will make a good daily driver in good weather and in bad weather. Overall it will most likely be garage kept and babied, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty can it handle decently in poor weather conditions including heavy snow.
If needed I'm willing to buy a set of snow shoes for the car but will it really matter if I'm stuck plowing 4 inches of snow with the front spoiler.
Actually has anybody plowed that much snow in their X-fire with out breaking their front spoiler?
Overall I'm looking for a No Bullsh** assessment because I fear that my joy of driving an X-fire in the warm months is clouding my judgment of the cars overall practicality.
It only took me one blast from 0-80 mph to know that this is a legenday car, but can it be legendary all 12 months of the year?
Thanks Guys For Any Input

If you're buying it from a dealership, tell them to include a $500 beater. LOL This isn't a car you want to drive in the winter. There are members up here in MN that have and I did with my last one (base coupe) but even with a great set of blizzacks, it's still a rather unpleasant experience, especially in fresh wet snow, stop and go traffic or on bridge decks. Mind you this was with a manual so it will be compounded by the extra power of the SRT. Now I don't want to be a negative nancy and I'd love to see you buy this car because they truly are one of a kind and generally bring great new people to the community. That being said, save up for a beater for the next 5 months and put the SRT away when the snow flies.
BTW, I have relatives out in Huntington Station and was out there during the winter a few years ago. I now know why more states are using sand and gravel... NY is using up all the salt. LOL
Take care and hope you go get the SRT... and in a few months, a winter beater.

In 4" of snow, driving would be tough. Clearance is more like 4.9". With that said, I live in Nashville and we get more ice and sleet than snow which is still hard at times to drive in. My daily is an SRT 6 and before that I had a N/A coupe for 3 years. You can get around if you KNOW how to drive. GET THE CAR!!!!!! I bought two!!!!! I do recommend a cheap car for the really bad days, if you have any doubts. The SRT 6 is so much fun that it's justify the second car.

I live in MN and started driving my SRT right away in January. Coming from an A4 Quattro it was shocking how poorly it went through snow. Buy the car and get a winter beater. It handled very cold weather no problem but was terrible when snow fall was over 1/4".
I disagree. I live in MN also, Used it as a daily driver my first winter 0f 2008, bought it in Dec 2008, and went thru all that winter and have gone thru 8" of spring snow, and while I had a bit of a problem going up the angled drive, I really didn't have a problem. And this was with hust the Conti A/S on it. You take it easy, have winter skins on it and it should be fine. The car is so well balanced that with an 80-100 pounds over the rear axle you can really see the difference. You guys have limited hills on the island, I lived in Farmingdale for a year, and you'd have slush build up, but again, 8" of snow on that say was nothing as long as I kept moving and that was on uphill slants too. By the car, try it out, and on the few days that you get these massive storms just do public transport, or hitch a ride, but really, in my experience it was alot better than I expected. But rear wheel drive was all I had prior to 1982. And this handled way better than the ones I had in the past. the biggest issue is the width of these tires. They just plow alot of snow in front of them.
Oh, and if you get ice on the wheel shelves it can imbalance the car big time scaring the bejewels out of you because you hit 40mph and you think the wheels are ready to come off and launch you like Chuck Yeager in a full downward spin. Clean the ice or snow pack off, and it just purrs along like it was 95 and sunny.

I have driven several rear wheel drive cars in the snow. The 2000 Mustang GT was the worst. I drove a G35 Coupe With Blizzak snows no problem. I also drove a 135I in the snow no problems. The whole key is the tires. Get dedicated snow tires and you will be fine. Hey if there is a foot of snow then you shouldn't be out anyway.
I have a base coupe with a manual tranny, and with a set of Blizzaks it did fine in the snow. Properly equipped, you'll do OK. I fully understand why others may not want to drive these cars through northern winters, but it can be done. For the SRT-6, winter mode with the autostick, and a light foot are in order. It's got plenty of torque so this isn't hard.

I DO drive it in the snow, I did in the winter of '08/'09 in Chicago (base coupe) and also in the winter of '09/'10 (last winter) in my SRT-6. I equipped it with blizzaks and also put 100lbs of sand in the hatch for a bit more weight in the rear.
It made it just fine, with only one issue being trying to go up a 15degree incline in the middle of a heavy snowstorm. Other than that, if you know how to handle the car and know how to feather the gas properly then it won't be an overwhelming issue. Though I did try to avoid any long trips during the winter so it kept me close to home on the worse days.
P.S. I live in Northern, NJ and my SRT is decently modified (~375whp). So while I do have an opinion, I would probably say it would be easier in a stock SRT6. Go for it, but I do think having a $500 beater isn't a terrible idea since (for me) since I was basically going back and forth to work and that's pretty much all she got driven on crappy days.

I'll sell you mine. $210shipped.
My mom had a Dodge Dynasty. I think I spelled that word wrong. Anyway true story. There was only 2" of snow - ice mixture on the road. A big chunk of collected rear fenderwell ice fell from a car she was following. She couldn't safely avoid hitting the ice chunk. It took out her transmission pan with transmission lines. Police gave her a ride home. Squirrel Crusher
