Default Cannards

I have an idea that might benefit you track guys. I am engineering some cannards for the front of the XF, a larger one and a small one, they could be used individually or in tandem. I will make a mockup from wood first to see how they look. Would anyone have an idea on how to measure the downforce that would be generated on the front of the car? They will have a reverse wing configuration and should develope a good bit of downforce, that would help keep the front glued to the track. I'll post a picture when I get the mockup done, probably after the new year.

I think the OP is referring to small "wings" mounted to the front fascia, probably between the side marker lights and the foglights.

Would it (they) need a lot of beefing up on the inside of the PLASTIC facia so the paint doesn't chip/crack when downforce is applied and the PLASTIC bends?

Hey, I'm not making them, just clarifying!

But, duh, yeah! I would think/hope so!

The downforce provided by most canards wouldn't be strong enough to disfigure the fascia unless he's going 150+mph

The fascia plastic is pretty thick, and as long as all mounting points are securely fastened, there shouldn't be too much flex. To remain aesthetically pleasing, they will likely be narrower than 2". It won't be generating F-1 levels of downforce.

Having said that, 3M tape isn't going to cut it. You'll need a proper way to attach them to the bumper (rivets or integrated threaded studs that pass through)

Unless there are other splitters/diffusers on the car, I think it would look out of place. He did mention it for road racers, so they should have that area covered.

Ask Squirrel Crusher (Don) as he has made and installed a set front and rear, although I think his are more intended for looks than aero, but I could be wrong...

He is the only person I have seen design, create, and install a set here on the forum. I have a set he made for me and have not had time to install them...

Yes, there would have to be some bracing inside the fascia, I think maybe a piece of 1/8 in sheet steel. I'm going to ask my brother, an engineering graduate from Drexel U. to help measure the forces involved. It just wouldn't do to have the entire front fascia take a nosedive into the pavement at speed. Any ideas would be appeciated, I know that there are some pretty smart dudes on this forum, probably more so than any other forum I've seen. As to the rubbing on the paint, I was thinking of using a thin bicycle innertube to make a gasket???

I never cease to be amazed at the ingenuity of posters on this site. Those cannards look wild on the DTM cars (at least they did last year.....outlawed this year). Love to see and XF with a big splitter and cannards.......

Don't they make a "shelf paper" out of a vinyl? Maybe spray adhesive the non sticky side to the splitter and let the normal sticky side lay against the bumper.. might have to use alcohol or something for a final cleanup at worst case upon removing them?

It's gonna take a lot of alcohol to put those ugly things on my car!

First round's on me.

If a pedestrian that you hit with these takes you to court you'll find they haven't a leg to stand on.

It's amazing how clever one can get after a little alcohol...

At least I did!

(...chuckle...)

To the OP:

give it a shot, buddy. Don't let these guys get you down. Just make sure to make it look good too. Or you'll get a hard time from folks.

I would expect nothing less. These are not intended to be weapons and how many pedestrians has onehundred80 hit? I make it a habit to miss them, how about you? The game plan is to make them look as integrated as possible.

give it a shot...but as the other splitter thread took a turn...probably so will this one...never anything wrong with customizing your ride... the lower front lip of the srt6 spoiler is weak to say the least. At high speeds my go pro mounted there was buffeting something terrible... but the car held to the ground just fine up to 160...IF I ever get the tune on the 2 cars redone....lol...it failed last Thursday, I will push it a little further...schedule for another try Monday...

Thanks for the encouragement. I need to apologize for the misspelling, it should be canards, only one n. It turns out it's French for Duck. I noticed that the lower lip is weak and was looking for a way to stabilize that. Good luck on your high speed run, I will probable never see that kind of speed in my car, I have no place to attempt it and no real desire.
