So… First try at the state smog referee………PASS! He said he's never seen such a clean install and loved it. We had tons of time to talk considering it was an hour and a half inspection and he asked why?, I told him, it's never been done, and I got 32 to the gallon on the way there. He said, "geez, more power, better emissions, and better fuel consumption… You can't beat that!"

I told him 2005 SL500 engine, and we had to pull out my Star DAS WIS for parts diagrams because his were flawed but it was all settled and he was an awesome guy. I should have failed because of my makeshift exhaust manifolds he said, but they were using OEM pieces and there were no leaks, plus he understood how the originals wouldn't have worked after I showed him pictures. All in all, great experience, great guy and since no one passes their first "engine change, smog ref inspection", I was extremely happy.

Thanks! and yeah you are really lucky lol. It seriously sucks!!! If one thing is the wrong part number or routing from their horrible diagrams, fail. I had to pull pics from the mercedes workshop manual. I also talked to the guy about the 55K motor and it's a good thing I'm going in steps. The 55K motor in a NA crossfire would fail since the air pump is driven from the SC, not an electric one on the front. If you start with an SRT it's ok. Or if you are currently based on a platform that motor came in which I am now since I smog by the SL R230 class. I may not even need to visit the ref for the 55K swap, just smog normally since it was an "option" by which I smog now.

The last thing they mentioned which will be enforced is the whole ULEV to ULEV BS.

Found a pic, nice!! They would still give us **** since it's not in the exact same place, but it's easy to just say it wouldn't fit obviously lol. Like I told everyone though, it just depends on what side of the bed they woke up on. This guy was cool, but used the entire hour and a half for inspection.

Well, 55K swap looks to be a breeze emissions wise.

Focus for the build stands, in order:

SS Intake tube's from friend + K&N filters

Tune - Interesting data and equipment to come to life from this one hopefully (and not what you're expecting)

Put the new OEM rim on, Plasti black and clear - Haven't cause I'm lazy

New lower passenger control arm

Alignment

Wavetrac

SPEC clutch - Which wont go on until the 55K motor goes in. I emailed SPEC asking what they have that'll hold 700 ft-lbs for a crossfire that's as daily driveable as possible... They haven't responded lol.

Then the beast of a motor... Which will more than likely see quite a lot of time, TLC and prep before going in, unlike this $250 5.0 that I said, f' it and slapped in lol.

Between collecting of parts, I'll be designing my SC cooling circuit. Also, the interior will be touched up here and there. Slowly working towards restoration on some of the ruined areas.

55K SWAP?.... Way to go!

When did all of this happen? Those things are pretty rare, where in the world did you find one?

~
Kudos ~

Thanks!!! Unfortunately I dont have one yet or the money for one lol. Your build/ tinkering with the 55K ECU pushed me to want one, plus Jim running 10's didn't help .

They're all over ebay though. $6K for one with everything, accessories included. I'm thinking, buy it, swap it, sell the 5.0 complete with everything for a crossfire build + an ECU to work with it. Make a good chunk of my money back.

Ok, you had me going there...

Save yourself a grand up front by going w/a SL55 (S-body) front sump oil pan vs dual sump (E55).

$6K w/accessories would a great price - if low mileage...

I have accumulated a hand full of extra 55K parts that you are welcome to if needed...

Thanks for the tip on the pans. I had to deal with that from my last swap, but I just re-used the pump from the V6 and the upper pan was $80. The lower from the V6 fit. I'll have to research on the pumps and pans between the 500's and 55's.

The mileage I'm hovering around is 50K-80K. I don't want to go higher than my chassis (78K currently).

Sounds good Steve, I appreciate it.

Bored & nothing to do so I dug around a little...

I saw where some of the older 99-03's (eBay) were fairly cheap but I don't know if you would want to go with anything older than '04. I found this locator site that has a few E55's but no SL55's (2005). Most have 80K to 130K miles,
6 month to 2 year warranty>> here

One that has fairly low miles, 32K >>2005 Mercedes E55 AMG 211 Type $6,951.00 Shipping Included

Dang, I want a heated garage....

Dang, I want a heated garage....

That Automotix site has screwed me on parts before. I'm always leary with them now. Not bad on the prices though.

I've thought about a minor project motor as well like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/06-MERCEDES-W211-AMG-E55-S55-ENGINE-MOTOR-ENGINE-MOTOR-SUPER-CHARGE-TURBO-OEM-/181250757870?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a336314ee&vxp=mtr#ht_559wt_1124
Only because it could end up an amazing deal if I either had the parts on hand already or it really didn't need that much work. That price makes it way worth it.

I know you're not going to buy this guy but I feel for the one that does...

That missing chunk of block casting is what holds the oil filter housing, which is also missing in action..
Good for parts I suppose.

That other one is a bad *** deal though. If I had the funds right now, it would be mine.
