Default Cheap fix for curb rash

Although probably temporary ( I don't know yet how long it will last ), I got this idea from maxcichon and gave it a try.
Results are very good.
I picked up a pair of silver Sharpies from Wally-World and touched up the wheels.

Did you do a little light sanding to smooth out the area first?

No, too lazy for that. Just put it straight on.
( some of the cuts on my wheels were way too deep for sanding anyway, previous owner was a lady lawyer in Chattanooga who seems to just love curb parking ....... )

BTW: also used the pen to 'paint' the stick-on wheel weights - worked pretty good there too, although the inside of the wheels is a different shade than the outside.

Another thing that works a little better because its thicker is Testor's model paint in those little square bottles. A couple of coats worked in against the grain of the rash and it fills in nicely. Testor's makes a chrome silver, that's the one to use. Apply with a Q-tip.

The specific wheel paint is : Crossfire Satin Silver, Paint Code # XZA and is Mopar Part # 05179660AB (touch up pen with brush) anyone tried to order it from a dealer?

Its listed on this pdf file under 2006 Passenger Cars, Exterior paint at the bottom of the page:

I too found the Testors to work excellent. I NEVER curb park any of my vehicles. I'll park a mile away and take the bus in before risking a door ding or grocery cart attack.

Forget the dealer, how about a standard auto paint and body supply store? They should be able to make a match of the factory color 'cause that's what they do all day long. Maybe they can just build it from the recipe book they use.

I agree, as I said earlier, that testors silver is a good match. Plus they'll be enough left over to paint the wheels on your 1:24 scale model.

We noticed some curb rash when we bought it and there's a shop in town that will refurbish the stock wheels for $100 a piece.

But I'm thinking that touch-up paint is the way to go. Probably need to repaint when the Blizzaks go on this winter. It's such a skinny edge on the bead edge of those wheels.

Billie, have you checked my thread over on the tires section? I have 3 bent wheels which correspond to the three wheels that have curb rash. The one that is bent beyond repair has the worst rash. The other two not so bad, and not bent as bad. All done by the previous owner.

Not sure if these wheels are that delicate or I am the victim of just plain old fashioned bad luck. Funny thing is, the car never vibrated at interstate speeds or lower. It was the RF tire that was cupping that started all this. At any rate, based on my experience, it would be worth looking into. Happy motoring!!

Funny you mention RF tire cupping along with the wheel rash. My RF tire is cupping! It's the only one. And the fronts have the rash. Hmm.

Well, it just may be worth your time and effort to check that wheel. My tire guy pointed his finger at the RF bent wheel as the culprit for my cupping. Time will tell on that one.

One more thing, I did notice a very slight cupping on the LF tire as well when it was off the wheel only. That wheel is also bent, but much less so, with what I would categorize as a medium case of curb rash.

I'll take some pictures of the bent wheel I'm replacing first when my new one comes in, in about a week. Let us know how things work out. Happy motoring!!

Thank you, you as well. I'll check the tires Friday. That's when I get it back with a new torque converter.

To add to this rash = bent wheel theory I to had the same issue!
After purchasing my car I noticed the tires needed replaced so I took over to my uncles shop they fixed me up with cooper xeons. I did notice that al of the wheels had rash on them... After 10,000 miles no burn outs or track driving the tires were shot!!! I was furious I took them back to the shop and my uncle was puzzled. I took the car to my other uncles garage and had the alignment checked and it was fine. So, back to the tire shop and we pulled the tires off. My uncle said give me that wheel. He rolled it across the floor and it shook and wobbled we both looked at each other with wide eyes and the same results with the other three!!! I went home and ordered my TSW wheels and had them get me hankook v12s I have 8000 miles on them and a few burn outs the damn things look great!! O btw the bastards smoke like crazy!!!! Nice thick white smoke n like 4 seconds of spinning!

The funny thing in all of this, for me at least, was the fact I had no indication any of my wheels were bent. Absolutely no vibration front or rear all the way up to 85-90MPH. (Drive faster at your own risk on Vermont roads) A number of years ago I bent a wheel on my 4X4 pickup and knew it the second it happened. Shook the fillings out of my teeth at 70MPH!

I look back here on this site and see people experience tire cupping issues almost from day one with seemingly no reason. Maybe we now have one, I dunno. Time will tell I guess.

I think you/we are onto something here. I've seen posts attributing RF tire cupping to wheel bearings, etc., but those stock wheels are so thin at the edge, how could it NOT bend the wheel to hit a curb? I had the same observation, TiredRetired, that there's no real vibration at highway speeds, but maybe the tire is absorbing it and wearing accordingly. Dunno. I'll have mine checked. I had new fronts put on three years ago and I believe they spin-balanced then, but now I'm wondering.

Totally! My observation exactly. Beautiful wheels, but like many alloys out there, they just cannot take any shame & abuse.

Anybody else, feel free to chime in here and give some thoughts. Watch your tire wear and catch it early. If your RF is cupping, now you know where to look.

Same with mine never any vibrations until the tires wore to the point they had no give or absorption left. I could not believe the difference with TSW wheels! I think I will be going with a 285 rear next time tho.
