Default Conical vs. Reverse Conical

Maybe some of you have had experience with both but conical shaped intakes are more widely used.

I'm starting to buy the parts for my intake and wanted to know if there is any difference (other than design) between the normal conical filter and a reverse conical filter. The difference is in the picture and it seems as though the reverse conical can directly take in air through the front (or top) of the filter possibly eliminating hotter air allowing more cool air into the intake.

So my question is, does anyone know of any gains by the different design. The description does tout more and better airflow due to the open top design whereas the universal conical one takes in air all around it rather than directly.

Reverse Conical

the one on the bottom looks more restrictive than the first picture, but it also seems to have more filter area.

I think it's really close to the same cone filter but if I can direct air through the front grille (like the OEM intake is) directly into that hole, it might be better suited than pulling air directly from the engine bay like the cone filters do. I know there will be some air pulled by the engine bay but not as much as the typical cone.

For $20 more (well $40 since I'm getting 2) it's worth the shot.

if properly designed the reverse cone can help air flow properly into the intake path... for a good example look at apexi filters... that inner plastic cone can help intake flow by maintaining air velocity as the air does not slam into each other...

the K&N like design you have shown is merely for increased possible CFM (raw flow of air possible through the element) and will net gains IF the engine cannot flow enough CFM through the standard cone filter ... so on a forced induction application that needs more flow you will see a gain with the second filter likely but on a NA crossfire either one is fine and is nowhere near the best filter you can use on the car... either is better than the stock panel filters however.

look into apexi filters... will require more work to get them to fit though...

why not use a flat filter element, i hear they flow a little better, but then you have to build something to house it. more work.

Yeah I saw them but went with hte K&N's but I bought 2 of them and I'm not just gonna slap them in there but rather take the time to get the positioning right to get proper flow and better air temps. I just wasn't sure if people had dealt with them at all.
