Stuck in Gear
A couple of weeks ago after pulling away from a set of traffic lights my car wouldn't change up gear. Even using the tiptronic, it wouldn't change. I stopped the car, moved the selector out of drive, through N, R and P, and back to D, heard a bit of a clunk noise going back into D. This still made no difference and it was not until I turned the ignition off and back on again did it correct itself. Since then it's been OK until the other day. After a 200 mile motorway journey and getting back to slower roads, I noticed the car had poor acceleration. Put your foot down and it would pull away really slowly, this time it was stuck in 5th!! I pulled over and stopped, and when I took my foot off the break the car did not creep forward as it usually does, the same in reverse, nothing. Turned the ignition off and on again and it was OK, but once it was again in 5th it just wouldn't change down...
It's an '05 with 18K miles on the clock, why would it do this ???

Well after a month and no reply I can almost answer my own question now. (And I thought you guys on this forum had all the answers)!!!
The car went to the dealer and they told me a leak from the gearbox resulted in the oil contaminating the ECU which was causing the problem. So they have fixed the oil leak and replaced the ECU, however, they can not program the ECU to the car.
They tell me, when they try to do this it says the new ECU is to old for the car, yet Chrysler are telling them it's the correct ECU. Has anybody come across this before?? I've been without my car for a month now and I getting fed up with the dealer.
Help!!

Which ECU - I though the gearbox ecu was inside near the amp? Hope the oil didn't get there.
Service manual "covers" programming the gearbox ecu, unfortunatly it's not a diy job - need to be hooked up.
Hope they get it sorted soon.

Thank you for your info & starting this thread, maybe now that the email notification feature works, we will get some more responses.
I've had somewhat of a similar problem with my SRT6 Roadster w/ 9000 mi on the clock. It seems to get stuck in 2nd Gear & can't get out in any fashion, then all of a sudden it is OK again?
It was a real pain at the Dragon Meet last weekend
But, I still "Smoked em all"!
I've got to get this worked out, I can't get to the Dealer for several
weeks yet.
I hope it's not a problem with my New SRT6 I'm getting, I just love these Beasts!

PS Thanks Toy!

Was it a motor oil leak or a tranny fluid leak? The reason I ask is because if it was a tranny leak there is a recall for the tranny "O" ring leak that should have been performed by the dealer during prep for delivery (that is if you have an attentive dealer and a compentent/intuitive tech). Evidently IMHO the tech/dealer does not know what they are doing and maybe you should seek out another dealer with a competent tech, if the car is still under warranty they have to fix it......may not be in the time frame that you would like........but they have to solve the problem. Suggest that they transport the car to another dealer at thier expense or at Chrysler expense to see if the issue can be better addressed.

. As for attentive dealers, well there lies the problem. In the UK the Chrysler dealers are usually part of a Merc, Chrysler and Smart multi dealer complex, and although the car is really just an SLK, with Chrsyler styling, you get treat like a second rate citizen when you go the garage if you don't have a Merc, in my opinion. I also have a Smart which puts you right at the bottom of the pile, but thats a fantastic car The good news is the car is under warranty so they WILL fix it, and after a letter of complaint to the Service Manager, I also now have their full attention. My concern is that it's taking them so long, which they say is down to waiting for a response from Chrysler technical. It would seem that if the UK dealers had only responded to the recall about faulty O rings, then all of this could have been avoided.
Oh joy !!!!

Bought the car at the Cumbo dealership in Stoke On Trent - but didn't think I would go there for a service - that would put me in a worse position than people in the US that have to go to a Chrysler dealer.
Supprised a dealer has have taken so long to get yours sorted - what did they give you as a courtesy car?

. I told them I has happy to use my Smart, but no after a month I wish I had asked for one, a 300c perhaps.Good news anyway, had a call today from the garage and they believe they have fixed it, all being well I should get it back tomorrow.
Can't wait to find out what they have done.

For any UK members - I should say never had a problem with Cumbo Stoke, just hesitant as they primarly sell Jeep and Dodge and Chrysler MPV things - don't know how many times there service people have played with the M112 V6 engine.
