No offense, and I hope you don't take this the wrong way.

It strikes me as odd that you have 20" Giovanna's on all 4 corners (I know those cost some $$$), but you are interested is saving a couple bucks on a couple hundred dollar used muffler.

Maybe I'm reading that the wrong way.....but it just struck me as strange.

Good ... I'm very pleased to hear that ... I felt the same way ... I knew from the first moment I turned the key in a Crossfire that IMO there should be more sound ...

what I wanted was that sort of thing one hears from a Lambo or Masserati ... I think of it as the sound of power under control ... not just loud ... and with the ANSA, that's exactly what I felt I got ... I could not be happier with mine and am glad to hear you feel the same ...

Gary, that sounds good and looks like a great install. I need to ride in it at the Dragon because I am definately going with some kind of exhaust mod this summer. Does it appear the tips are too close together to fill the opening or is it alright?

Nice job, James

I just emailed you a picture of mine ... I think it's alright, but it's like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, not everyone sees things the same way ...

The tips are close together as all the round tip performance mufflers are.
It does not fill the entire area as the OEM tips did but it still looks very nice IMO and is perfectly centered

This particular muffler does not allow a way for the OEM tips to be welded on either.

That is a restriction with the smaller pipe, it looks like that muffler has something like a 2 1/4" inlet and the exhaust is 2 1/2" which could hurt performance.

then the muffler appears to be 2", the muffler sounds nice but it restricts the exhaust and that normally means less power.

edit:

yep, it sure is 2"

http://www.ansaautomotive.com/ansasp..._mufflers.html

that is not good at all to go to a smaller pipe.

If my car has less power, it's certainly not evident in normal driving ... perhaps if I were using my car to compete at the track, that could be a different story ... but, from my perspective, there's no diminishment in top end performance ... I can still go from 80mph to triple-digits with very little effort while going up a grade that slows other traffic to a speed well below the limit ... if there is a difference, I can't discern it ...

your observation IS interesting, though since just yesterdayI had a telephone conversation with another member who has been looking into a muffler switch and we were talking about this very point ... he told me that a small amount of difference such as this, that far back, would not affect performance ... he said that if it were FORWARD in the system, maybe ... but not at the back ...

that said, I'm certainly no expert ... just a guy who enjoys driving his car.

of course it is not going to make a major drop in power but it will affect your power. I would guess you lose about 3whp with that restriction.

an exhaust is only as efficient as its smallest point.

take a 6" coffee can and open both ends then breathe through it.

it is very easy isn't it.

now take a 6" coffee can and only open one end then poke a small hole in the other end and stick a straw in it.

breathe through the straw, big restriction.

now flip it over and breathe through the big end of the can, same exact restriction, lol. it does not matter if it is at one end or the middle or the other end. it will be the same restriction.

If I lost any HP it is of no concern to me and I love the sound and I love the car.
I didn't buy it to race or set record times so no concerns here.

breathe through the straw, big restriction..

not a valid illustration ...

to be valid in this case, your 6" can, open only at one end should have an opening at the opposite end of 5.3" ....

I think your example is extreme. Maybe you should take a piece of 2 1/4" PVC and reduce it to 2" and blow thru it and see if you can tell the difference. I would think Gary has increased hp rather than decrease it. He went from the restrictive OEM muffler which has baffles, 90 degree bends etc. to a free-flow straight thru design.

the example was meant to be an extreme so it was clear how restrictions work.

as for the muffler, that is true it may actually balance out the loss from the pipe restriction if it is indeed a flow through design muffler. can you look in one end and see through the other?

It is a N/A car, even if the pipe is slightly smaller and the inside of the muffler is less restrictive then he will probably gain a small amount of HP. Besides he loves the sound and 3hp doesn't mean anything on a daily driver.
