The cap (with filter) has a lip on it that was flush with the filter housing before I changed my oil. The large top 'O' ring slipped into the second groove of that cap/stem assembly (where the original one came out of on my first oil change). Screwing it back together, the cap lip seated exactly the same way on that housing, with that 'O' ring sliding down into the housing (thereby sealing that cap/housing against leaks). There is no bulging of the 'O' ring out of that cap/housing mating surface, and that lip is again flush with the top of that housing. Is there a different filter cap/housing configuration used on the 07 down to the 04 model years on the N/A M112's?
Short answer...... no.

Longer answer...... the O-ring should go into the groove, if not it will leak. The face of the two parts should touch.
