Default Engine Oil additives - a good thing?

Hello all. I have been using engine oil additives like Slick 50, Lucas Oil in my other cars over the years. A few questions:

1)Does anyone else use any of these types of oil additives in their Crossfire?

2)Are they safe/recommended to use in the Crossfire Engine?

3)If so, what brand is the best? Slick 50? Lucas Oil? Others?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you

I think that if oil manufacturers and the car makers thought it helped they would add that something extra. Mercedes says specifically NOT to add anything to the oils.
Add it if you think it helps, it's your car. Personally I think it's a waste of money.

I used to use oil additives way back when. As long as you are using a good synthetic, stay away from the additives. The synthetics nowadays have all the additives your car will ever need.

Don't add anything to the oil.
The engine doesn't need anything except an oil that meets the MB 229.3 or 229.5 spec, as those oils have everything in them that the engine will ever need.

Adding Slick 50 to the oil won't do anything positive for the engine at all, and that oil does not meet the MB specs, and can possibly cause damage instead.

BC.

Yes it is an old thread but regardless I will never add any oil additive to any car I own
Use a quality oil and change your oil and filter frequently enough and additives are never needed IMO

The only additive the engine oil needs is a new filter and new oil every 5000 miles.

I see I avoided posting to this thread in 2011, probably because I knew that you can't convince people that silly snake oil additives are generally a bad idea.

What one needs to remember regarding additives in motor oil is, if you are using a Multi-Grade motor oil (which most of us use nowadays), the oil already has a polymeric additive typically referred to as a Viscosity Index Improver (VII). These help sustain the viscosity of the oil over the typical temperature range the oil would experience. There really is no need to add another oil additive to these motor oils. Single-Grade motor oils could possibly benefit from an oil additive, but typically these grades were used in older model engines & oil change intervals were recommended by OEMs as being between 3000 & 5000 miles. It would be unusual for these oils to degrade enough to require a "boost" from an oil additive as long as the recommended oil change interval was being adhered to. And over the years, there have been significant improvements in engine design and motor oil formulation (my 1968 Mustang Fastback didn't have synthetic motor oil available to use) such that today's OEM recommendations typically don't reference additional oil additives. Like others before me, I don't add any additional oil products to the engines in my cars.

I like STP, I’d never use the stuff but their decals made race cars that much better looking.

And I am still trying to hold a screwdriver coated with STP by the blade - very frustrating.
( I also tie every new wristwatch I get to an outboard propeller to test it's timekeeping quality )

I agree with essentially all of this. In fact, I attribute the advent of technology's role in the formulation of modern synthetic oil to why I not longer preach heavy (40 and 50 weight) motor oils. Back in the 70's and 80's, I used 15W40, 20W50 and even 30 or 40 weight oils in most all engines. Back then, I never would have envisioned putting 5 or 0 weight oil in an engine! But today, all the motor oils I use are 5W40 (Crossfire) or 10W40 (Ford Ranger).

Today, the products we are putting in our engines are, I believe, superior to what we had 40 or 50 years ago. Dave, (180) would you agree?

I agree, back in the day we would put heavy oils in the engine to quieten it down and reduce the blue smoke coming out the tail pipe when it was worn out and had sloppy rings and bearings. Some crooks put heavy oil and fine sawdust in the gearboxes to quieten them down as well.

We are dating ourselves. I remember those Timex ads with John Cameron Swayze.
