Default Oil Change Issues

So I did my first oil change on my 04 Crossfire this weekend. It was my first time changing a cartridge filter, and it was easy. I followed the instructions in my 2004 Chrysler Service Manual, Crossfire. I drained the sump, changed the filter, and filled with 6.1 quarts of 0w40 full synthetic according to the fill capacities indicated in the Lubrication & Maintenance section of the service manual. I checked the dip stick and it appeared to be between the min and max fill lines.

I drove off and after a while the low oil indicator light came on. I immediately pulled over and cut off the engine. I thought I had forgotten to tighten up the sump drain plug or something. I saw no leaks. I checked the dipstick and the level was still reading on the stick as before.

I was scratching my head and trying to figure out what had gone wrong. Then, just for fun I checked the owner's manual. The owner's manual says to fill to 8.5 quarts with an oil change. I added the rest of the oil I needed and now everything is fine.

I'm wondering if I can trust any of the other fluid capacaties in this manual now. Anyone think the rest of the fluid capacities look okay to follow? I've got the manual tranny and I was going to drain and fill that, along with the rear axel soon.

Think there was a prior post on this, but Service Manual capacities are wrong and Owners Manual capacities are correct. Amsoil website also has correct fluid capacities.
Tranny holds 3.8 pints and diff holds 2.7 pints.

Where does it say the engine only takes 6.1 Qt. of oil?

When I removed the drain plug it drained a lot more than my typical oil change. I've always had V6 motors and they typically have 5.5 quarts when filled. I thought that 6.1 quarts seemed high for a 3.2L engine, but 8.5 quarts was a big surprise. The DIY oil change was about $90. Good thing its synthetic. I can see why people are complaining about paying over $100 for oil change service at different places.

I had a similar situation last month when I went in for my oil change to dealership. They put in 6 quarts of Mobile 1 synthetic oil because that's what service manual said. I made them add two more quarts. The previous times I went to same dealership they always added 8 quarts whenever I had an oil change. Is 8 quarts w/filter correct. thanks

According to everyone I've seen on this forum, and the owner's manual that comes with the car, and my oil change blunder this last weekend, you are correct. The fill capacity in the owner's manual says 8.5 quarts.

8qts is a good number, just below the max level and you use an even number of bottles or a jug and three bottles.
This leaves no part filled bottle on the shelf and after 16 oil changes you get one for free.

Up here in the frozen North we use liters so we can use all 8 bottles. If you have a friend who will bring you back a jug from the US you use it and 3 liters and you are good to go.

The wrong amount stated in the manual has been known before I was on the forum, probably since the first person read the manual, excluding the editor of course.

The XFire 3.2 liter V-6 actually requires 8 liters for an oil change - it is after all a M-B based product. That turns out to be 8.45 quarts. Like others, I always add 8 quarts back during an oil change. I do this because the 1st time I did an oil change, I added the 8.5 quarts. We then went to a XFire ToD weekend event a few weeks later and the warning light for oil overfill kept coming on during the ToD runs. I'd rather be slightly under than over.

99 bottles of Mobil1 0w40 on the wall, 99 bottles of Mobil1 0w40,
take one down and pass it around .....
( until there are 91 bottles of Mobil1 0w40, one of them half full / empty )

Just kinda rolls off your tongue

Yep 8.5qts = 8L for the V6. Like most things on this car items were simply transferred over and rebranded Chrysler. My guess is that the 6qt spec is for the 4 banger used in the slk230.

Same here, been putting in only 8 quarts for the same reason.

... for the past 45,000 miles.
