Default Low oil question - refill?

Hello guys!

I just returned from a trip with long and mainly highway miles. At the end of the trip the low-oil indicator light would come on randomly then disappear again. I checked the oil level and it seems like there is definitely not enough oil in there as the dipstick shows oil at MIN level!
I got an oil change in February of this year and have since put 3,000 miles on it. Should I go for an oil change again or can I just top off with 0w-40?
If so how much and where do I fill it?
I'm going down again right now and trying to get an electronic reading to see how many quarts are really missing!

Thanks for your help.
Nick

Add a quart if the reading is at the MIN mark.

Do not go in for an oil change, that'd be wasteful... There's one quart between min and max lines. You should probably find out where the oil is going, but the valve cover gasket is the common culprit, and easy to spot from the top of the engine. Mine leaks about .5qt between oil changes so I probably won't mess with it until it either gets worse, or I change the spark plugs.

You can read the oil level on the dash. Turn key on and immediate press the left dash **** once. 7 seconds later the display will change. Press the **** twice and it will display the oil level. A description is on page 125 of the '07 owner's manual under "Checking Oil Level".

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately that did not work. Tried it yesterday a few times and it just didn't do anything. All it did was change to the "service display" displaying the wrench!
No big deal, I am off today and heading to Autozone to get a quart of oil. The reading of the dipstick is basically at MIN and so 1 quart should do the trick. Will have to keep an eye on it just to make sure I don't have a leak (no visible leaks so far).
My explanation is that the guy who did the oil change might have done 8 quarts instead of 8 1/2 and me driving on the highway in Florida A LOT with the heat might have burned through 1/2 to 1 of a quart hence the light.

Btw, hello from the Tampa Bay area...I was just in your neck of the woods 3 days ago on my way back from Palm Beach!

I think you'll find that while the service manual lists the capacity at 8.5 quarts 8 quarts will get you to the "full" mark. The tech that serviced mine last time put 8.5 quarts in. Way past the full mark....

Has anybody actually used the new Pennzoil Ultra? And if so, what did you think?

Just checked. Turn key on and immediately press the left button once. After 7 secinds the odo display will change and then press the button twice deliberately but without pause. This is what my display looks like & dipstick matches full. "K" is strange.

Yes, the "O" is obvious but the "K" is strange.

Looks like two arrows to me. One says "not to low" & the other one says "not to high". Yes, I know that is the only way the display could show OK. Now I just have to see what the display looks like when everything is on.
