Default Oil Level Sensor

I posted something like this in a different forum, I've gotten help but not to my last question which is ... can I remove the oil level sensor and block off the hole so it is no longer on my car? What, if any, problems might this cause? I know I would need to check oil level with the dipstick ... I already do it this way. I have more trust in the dipstick than a sending unit that leaks and fails at times.

I was going to change the o-ring, but if I can remove the sensor, block the hole, that should reduce any future problems with it ... any help and/or direction is appreciated

Think I found my answer after more research ... the Oil Level Sensor is also a Temp sensor so it seems ... I'll replace the O-ring and trust that stops the small leak I have ... Thanks for the help

"You cannot cheat the level sensor (B40) in your M112 engine.

The sensor in the oil sump is a complex piece of electronics that sends continuous data on a) oil level, b) oil temperature, c) oil quality, to the ME- SFI control unit (ECU).

The data on the 3 functions is processed and sent as a pulse-width modulated, square-wave signal to the ECU and then transmitted via CAN bus to the Instrument cluster."

Honestly if you have to remove it to the replace the o ring, I'd just replace it. Look at the age of the car, that sensor will likely be acting up sooner than later. Why do all that work again? When it starts flashing on and off and acting janky, your gonna be paranoid wondering if your low on oil or not. Thats just me.

From experience, since you have to drain the oil, remove the oil pan and reassemble, replacing the o-ring might solve your problem, but if not, you are doing the whole process over again to replace the sensor. I replaced the o-ring on mine (suggested by a Benz mechanic) only to find out that the oil wasn't leaking around the o-ring. The oil was actually coming out of the top of the sensor! It's not a big job but it is one you don't want to do twice and the sensor wasn't crazy expensive.
Good luck

I agree with both of you!

That is exactly what I said in his other thread. Then got the annoying pointless "if it ain't broke don't fix it" nonsense line. The heat gets to the sensor and it is a lot of work to just get to the sensor so no point in doing it twice!

The sensor isn't that expensive compared to some other parts.
