Default 8.5 Quarts and reading is "HI"

I just changed my oil for the first time. In my manual it said to put 6.1 quarts of oil in the car.
(I'm aware that it is a misprint. However...)
I added a little more than 6 quarts and it read low. I added the remaining 7th quart and my gauge read "-1.5Q" so I added exactly another quart and a half. Now the darn gauge reads "HI". Should I suck out half a quart?

Have you run the engine yet? If you're sure you've put in the exact amount of oil that might explain it because you'll need about 1/2 quart to fill the air space in the oil filter. If you haven't run the engine then that half quart will be sitting in the oil pan instead of in the filter.

If you *have* run the engine then suck out a little bit (maybe a quarter quart) at a time and check the level. Make sure you verify with the dipstick too, just in case your oil level sensor has gone wonky.

...And whatever you do, don't drive the car if it's overfilled! The rotating pieces inside the engine will make contact with the top of the oil pool in the pan and whip it up into a foam, which of course, doesn't lubricate things very well.

I verified the 8.5 qts for the W112 engine from a MB engine rebuilder. He said use 8 qts. because the extra half qt. has a tendency to overfill the bladder and make the pump less efficient. Take the extra .5 out if you want, but it won't kill the engine if you don't...

I've changed my oil (myself) twice - both time added precisely 8 qts (used 2x 1 gallon containers) of Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5-40 (never gets below 25 Degrees here). After 8 qts dipstick reads exactly full, as does monitor...best regards...ct.

This brings an interesting question to mind... anyone know of any problems using 5-40 oil in these cars? Given how much cheaper, and the fact you can get those gallon sized jugs of it, it would be nice if it works well. Does it mess with the FSS's head?

I've been using straight 40W Redline Racing oil since I bought the car two years ago... No problem with anything... I also use a qt. of MMO per oil change...

I use Mobil 1 0/40 and use 8qts. I have had no issues.

Did you drain it completely? Did you let it drain from the filter when you removed it as well? You can always suck some of it out if you have too much oil, if you used an oil vacuum like the topsider...

i drained it til there was just a tiny stream coming out. my friend said it could do it forever and so i just plugged it back up. but i didn't drain it without the filter in it. i was gonna take it to the hobby shop and just start draining and checking it, probably take awhile but get it down so its not above of the MAX line.
