Insist on Pilkington glass. It is British made and the original glass MFG. that will ensure that you get the proper shaded area.
Most glass replacement companies do not carry it and use stuff out of Mexico or China. It is not the same.

Also, the bedding compond is unique to the Benz car so if they handle Pilkington, they will mount it properly.

Insist on the Pilkington.

Windshield looked fine so I accepted. After installation the installer handed me a bill for $21 more than I was quoted with the explanation that I had refused the glass made in China and that the glass made in Mexico was more.

Just a warning to beware of Safelite!

Next time insist on Pilkington Glass. If they handle Pilkington, they also have the right adhesive compound and curing process.

As I understand it, they usually can't do it in your driveway.

I think one can assume that the insurance company charged their premium based on authentic MB compnents in the vehicle. So you paid for protection of the Pilkington part.

Your insuance Company's purpose is to insure the value of the asset insured for the lender. I would think they'd have to use proper repair parts and methods to maintain the asset's value.

They installed Pilkington glass for me, took them 3 hours to do it and i was the only guy there. They didnt put the center trim back exactly like It was I will have to move it over about 1/4 of a inch to get it to seat right though. And my insurance made me pay 250 outta the 375 that it cost, which sucks cause most of my friends said they would pay for it completely. Eh oh well

I don't know who your insurance Co is but .....They are supposed to insure the vehicle for "it's value." Only way you can get a loan on a car is to have it insured for it's value.
Perhaps you have a deductable which applies even on the windsheild. Many of the top insurers. like Allstate, have no deductable on the windsheild replacment. This comes in handy on some cars where windshields can cost $ 600.00 or more.

They have replaced mine on the roadster. Pilkington and proper Urethane bedding, cured inside the shop. No out of pocket.

Oh well, at least you got the right glass and install.

So, I now have a big rock crater in my windshield, passenger side, about 8 inches from the top.

IF they have to replace the windshield, and IF I insist on OEM glass and techniques and tools, what should I expect to pay? (My deductible is $500).

If you carry comprehensive on your policy, should be no more than 50 bucks if not free !

Already talked to them.... the glass deductible is same as Comprehensive: $500

I just want to know if a new one is over $500 using the OEM parts. If not, then I am on my own anyway!

I believe that the glass replacement policy is by State. Arizona if you have full coverage then you get free glass replacement. No deductible.

That is the law in Michigan as well. And yes, LAW.

Well, I went to the glass shop after work. He talked to my insurance claims department on the phone... and in 45 minutes, it was repaired. The insurance lady said, "we will process your claim, but they charge more than we pay... so you may have to return to pay him the rest tomorrow".

I gave him my cell number, but he said, "They always say that about me... you owe me nothing."

His sign says: "Windsheilds replaced $185". I asked him about a new one for my car, "Well, this costs more. $200."

I said, "What about the Pilkington glass, if I want that, what is the charge?" He said, "$200... look around my shop Pilkington is all I sell."

I guess I'm lucky. I have two stone chips in my windshield. One looks like a BB hit it but since I was driving the car when it happened I know it was from a thrown rock and neither crack has spread and it has been over two years since they happened. I just never bothered to have the windshield replaced and I have full glass coverage on the car.

I think it would be hard for a company to know all options on all cars with respect to windshields but if not there is an opportunity to make some cash writing some software and selling it to the windshield companies.

No wonder by the amount of rocks a driver in Arizona has to evade on a daily bases whilst driving on the freeway..........
